Yah! That’s where I found a few of them.

I’m really more worried about this chopped chop. Not finding any after-market chops. Wondering if/why "part out" sellers are missing that.

Most just sell the entire speed control.

SS has new ones!;)

Realize that wear is 'off center'. When properly aligned, that area becomes irrelevant. That is why straightening the legs is effective. Filing the smushed portion will make it usable again.

Heck!

I just realized I’ve been pricing the entire speed control assembly. All I really need is the quadrant assembly. Big difference in price on the SS parts list. I might could swap the chop myself and be good to go.

Still, though I don’t see any obvious problems with the speed changer itself, I’ll give the whole works a thorough going over before placing an order.

Also, can anyone offer an alternative to purchasing a hydraulic bearing press.
They don’t cost much but I can’t see myself using one for anything except this job. I mean, how often does one need to replace bearings anyway?

If there’s a cheaper way, that works near as easily, I may opt for that.

I really need to slow myself down with this a bit.

Looking over the Hydraulic bearing press at Home Deplorable, I noted that the thing is really just a bottle jack on a frame. I’ll bet that, all told, the parts to build $150-$200 press are cheaper than the finished products.

A 10 ton bottle jack, a few bars of steel, a few nuts and bolts …

A simple build, eh?

I brought this puller package from HF many years ago (80s) for around $20. I have pulled hundreds of bearings and gears with it and still use today for some bearings to move them so my hydraulic press can finish the job.

I still have available a free bolt package to replace the quadrant roll pin to prevent the legs from pulling apart. Over 350 of these bolts have been installed with no reports to me of quadrant failures after installing the bolt. I will need a PM with a mailing address. One way I am replaying for all the outstanding help I have received from Shopsmith owners. Installation instructions were noted in a previous response to this post

Whoa! This is good news.

Hello billmayo!
How about the quadrant (porkchop) itself; any available for sale?

Shopsmith is where I buy my new quadrants. I have been able to recondition about 50% of the damaged quadrants and reuse them. I do not have any extra speed control assemblies for sale as I sold what I had last year. I have been slowly clearing my extra inventory as I am only able to rebuild a couple of local headstocks this year.

I'm certainly not suggesting you should do so since a replacement is better, but I was able to mostly bend and somewhat file a pork chop in almost as bad shape into fine working order. I going the metal the worm hear if made of "flows" well when tapped with into shape again. I used a hammer to tap a punch against the bent teeth. I was in the same frame of mind... Worst case I'd is have to replace it anyhow. The metal bent out of shape without cracking noticeably in the first place so it had to be soft.

I probably would have just replaced it but I too just saw the price for the whole unit.

I was surprised at how much better it moved after that and, this is important... adding Bill Mayo's free pivot pin replacement bolt. He kindly sent me one with a part I ordered.

Prior to that it was binding badly. Now it is smooth.
