I gues technically since work does get done on it that little saw bench is a "work bench"

I does have a Wagon Vise in the top. Just no screw, it's wedge powered inspired by our own shipwright.

Hi Ed,

I did see the show but it was some time ago. It was very interesting and informative, while I'm not going to make my own. I especially like how the guy moved the metal.

I have one of these some where in the clutter of the of the shop, more then likely were I stuck all the other stuff I didn't have room for so now it is in a pile on the floor and up over my work bench. Someday that will change.

I got that in my hand tools days and found that all this stuff is way cool to have and to play with but as I aged I found it much to difficult to do it that way full time. I still attempt one or so project the old way but it keeps getting less and less fun and a lot more like work.

A the good old days...........

I watched that show... I like using hold-fasts. They hold well and are very quick especially on a piece that you need to move often as you work.
I also like several vises and I use a bench hook a lot. My bench hook is very basic and I made it probably 40 years ago. I also have several kinds of bench stops.
I keep finding myself drawn more and more to hand tools. Not like the purist, I still do most cutting and shaping by power but I would rather perform a few hand cuts or shaping cuts by hand than spend a lot of time making a machine setup for one cut or very small stuff.

I am really missing my woodshop right now but I am trying to get a lot of outside jobs and farm shop jobs done while it is outside weather. I am making progress but I am still woefully behind all over the place.
I promised myself that I would spend a lot of this summer working on the farm shop and get it reasonably organized come hell or high water.

The woodshop is 24' x 40' in a big room in the basement of the house. It is pretty full.

The farm shop is in a converted old 36' x 50' barn. The farm shop is considerably more diversified than the wood shop. In there I have tools and machinery for a lot of different kinds of work. It is part auto, truck and tractor repair shop (with full engine rebuilding capabilities). I also have a tire changer and a balancer as well as special handling and vulcanizing equipment (years ago I had a small tire and battery business), stuff like special tools for rear tractor tires or big truck tires. One of those items is a tool that holds a pair of dual truck rears on a moving platform with track to roll them in position under the truck bed. The farm shop is part welding and blacksmithing shop including some hydraulic bending presses and it is part machine shop. I am trying to streamline that shop a little since I no longer need to keep common parts for larger farm machinery for tillage, planting and harvesting of numerous crops. I've been getting rid of a lot of used parts stuff I have had for years and kept in case I needed it. I will never need most of it again. They say that "if you can't find it you don't have it" and that is what that shop was becoming.

Now I want it oriented toward my smaller old tractors and their smaller and simpler implements. I have a small collection of 2 wheel garden tractors, mostly Gravely, and I hope to get several rebuilt this year.
It's been great to be able to work again, now if I could just get my pesky back to cooperate a bit better. Can't have it all.

I've been on-line a lot less lately, just too busy.

I can't claim any high ground for being on-line less. While I am busier outside now, part of the change is due to my increasing propensity to sit down and doze off in the middle of the day.

I guess the cats and the dog are a bad influence on me.

Jay Leno once announced that his cat had insomnia... Said it could only sleep 23 hours a day...

Veering back on topic...

I want to add a piece to the apron on the front of my woodworking bench so I can use a couple of hold-fast for holding a board on edge there.
I want to make a few hold-fast but while I do a bit of metal pounding I don't expect to make anything quite as nice as the ones they had on the show. Sometimes hot metal will not follow verbal commands.

Peter and Mary May besides being on Roy's show. Also teach their craft at Roy's school in NC>
