Spindle Knob

My spindle knob came loose. Is it just a matter of tightening the Allen screw or is there a retainer ring that holds it plus the set screw? It appears there is a ridge and recess where a spilt ring could go.

Just the Allen screw. Make sure it seat on the flat.

One handy hint. When the knurled nut is properly installed the set screw on the nut and the set screws on the arbors will line up. Helps finding the flat when installing stuff on the spindle.

Pull out on the shaft and push in the collar as you tighten the set screw. That removes(minimizes) any end play.

No, two.

Right hand 'simultaneously' pulls the shaft while also pressing the collar 'in'.

Left hand operates the ss tool kit and simultaneously positions the collar 'around' the shaft so as to be centered on the tapered flat.

Simple 'multitasking'.

I've tried that maneuver and could never get any useful amount of pull on the quill shaft while pressing collar in with the same hand.

Maybe mount lathe chuck/drill chuck, go vertical and put a weight on a string in the chuck jaws? Would free up hand to just push collar in and leave other hand to tighten it.

I am not sure, but the two bearing quill may not need all this pull/pushing. The single bearing quill does for sure.
