Argumentative and nasty posts are sorta like Garden or Gopher snakes. I just ignore them and maybe, someday, they'll do some good.

I have to agree with Dusty. It is a loss to the forum, but he said This will be my last post on this forum, not that he would not visit the forum, so maybe he will still get the benefit of the forum.

The number of active users is always far less than the number of daily guests. Right now there are 261 guests and only 34 members. Yes, many people take benefit from the forum without being active members.

This has been true for a long time, maybe for the life of the forum. There must be some good reasons for that but I sure don't know what they are.

I do hope that notagoodforum will become one of those lurkers and maybe one day become active again.

I am a forum reader (look at the date joined and number of post) and after a while I figure out whether or not to read certain replies based on historical post. I respect Dusty and many members that are always willing to help. I ignore the worthless needling that waist space on the shopsmith servers...

Thank you for being a faithful reader. You are a bit different than many. You are at least registered and have a join date. Many (the vast majority) of the guests do not register. They just log on and read. There is nothing wrong with that but they all have so much to offer and by not sharing others are losers.

I know that sounds selfish but I don't think it is. I just wish there was a way to convince they all to "come on in and join the party".

Dusty, I for one enjoy most of the banter as long as it's good natured. As far as the stats, I have been a registered member for a number of years but just realized that I am usually counted as a guest because I don't log in when I just want to check what's going on without participating. I usually look several times a day but probably haven't been counted but maybe once a month.

I know that I am new here. But I DO know the Internet (started one of the first ISP's in New Mexico in the 90's) and I do know forums (have been a supermoderator on a few 100000 + member forums). All forums are like this. Dusty is right, but there is no way to stop it. If you over "police" people leave, if you under "police" people leave. There are always jerks and there are always lurkers and there are always childish posters and there are always newbies there to learn and most importantly, and this is what makes forums work, there are always, always experts and caring members that want to help.

As a mod I created a very thick skin and I try to keep that "suit" on, as difficult as it is sometimes. Some of the best forms I have belonged to (this is one of them) there is a good balance between banter and hijacking and good solid info. The childish stuff (which can be fun at times) is always going to be there.

As always my humble (but educated) opinion <-- Did you see that, I didn't even use a FLA like GSquared

Dusty, Dick, here are my thoughts on the subject;

In this (Community) section, anything goes, keeping in mind our "light PG" rating. That being said, I try not to hijack an important subject thread.

In the other 4 sections, we (me, especially) need to try to keep on the subject matter, so as not to ruin someone's experiences.

Dick, I have also had some experience as a Mod, even had Admin privileges, at one Forum. Not an easy job, but earned me about 6 brand-new motherboards. On that Forum, we also had a play room. where all formal (still kept up the PG rating rule) rules were off, but it was for Senior members only.

Skou, I too had admin rights. I found that you (as a moderator) don't want to make it too rigid, people need to interact, and that includes jokes, and ribbing. We, as mods, would usually send it to the "lounge" as we called it if it got out of hand. It is true, that someone reading a thread on how to adjust some part of a SS, doesn't want to wade through two pages of drivel to get the the crux of the subject. It is a fine line and hard to balance. This forum, at times does go a little over board and I have done it myself. Until lately, it has been pretty well self policed.

So you are right, we need to self "police" ourselves, and I will do my part to curb youthful exuberance LOL.
