Frustration with the 3 lever drill press handle

Hi,

I might be a bit confused here because of the version I have. Purchased from shopsmith new maybe around 1978 or so.

On mine only one handle has a ball on it. This is the one that is used to positon over the shaft indent and turned to tighten/loosen. The other two handles are just threaded from a flat end. Those two I never touch, no reason to.

I'm wondering what the reason is for having it any other way? Three handles, 3 indents, and mine works fine.

As far as the plastic grip comeing off, yes that happens from time to time, I have had only one do that and another I got off the bay came that way. Mine I skuffed up with some sandpaper and put it back on with some epoxy, it has held for 8-10 years now so I'm happy.

The other handle I was thinking of making my own wooden end but the handle just sits there while I walk by day after day... no progress in a half dozen years so make one and inspire me!

I've never had the slipping problem. One thing I didn't care for on my 3 handle unit was that when I wanted to take it off I had to figure out which handle to loosen. All three were black. I swapped the locking handle with a red one so I could tell which handle at a quick glance. I forget which SS now has the black handle.

I put jam nuts on the 'fixed' handles. All three the older squat red handles. Any body wanna trade for some skinny black handles?:D I 'think' I may be able to 'find' them!:rolleyes:
