Why are these different?
I have a 500 upgraded to a 510 and several of these parts, only one is a bit longer and tapered at one end. They all have the same size set screw.

I don't know why the power couplers are different but I don't believe that it has anything to do with the fact you upgraded 500 to 510.

I have a 510 (that I have now upgraded to a 520) and I too have those two types of couplers.

I'll be waiting to hear the answer.

On my SS the longer one is on top output shaft ( band saw, sander) and the shorter one is on the bottom shaft jointer).

I thought the difference was the difference in the two output shafts. The upper one has plenty of room for the increased length where the bottom on was closer to the cover.

I like the longer one on the top shaft easier to grab to turn the spindle.

I only got one (short) one with my secondhand '78. Is the copper color on your long one original? It could be that the long form was just the standard design for the Brownies ca. 1960, and it shortened up later.

The left one is a 4 spline hub and goes on the top drive sleeve shaft with the small part toward the headstock. I am find newer ones from Shopsmith has the same length with splines the whole length. I believe these can be used on both the top and bottom headstock shafts.

The right one is a 5 spline hub and used on the SPTs. I have both 1/2" and 5/8" ID hubs of this length for the SPTs.

Here are the two collars that are on my SS both are 4 spline drive collars.

The shorter one Part # 303 is called the Idler Hub, and is the one on the left it is on my bottom or idler output shaft and is used to drive my jointer.

The longer one is called a Spindle Hub Part # 301, which is the one on the right and is on my top or spindle shaft and is used to drive most other SPT's.

The only reason for the two lengths that I can see is the actual length of the output shafts. The bottom one is much shorter than the top.
The top collar is mounted with the recessed neck facing the Headstock.

Somewhere in my SS literature when I got the machine I was told to mount these two collars in this fashion. That is what I did and they have been there for over 20 years.

Incidently the drive hub or collar that mounts on the SPT's is a 5 spline and is made that way so you can't install the drive tube wrong. The spring always forces the tube off the headstock to keep it from becoming an air borne missile should you remove the SPT and not remember to remove the tube.

Thanks for the clarification. I've got so much SS literature I didn't know where to start looking for the answer.
(I bought my SS in '78 and upgraded it in '91. My first add on was the bandsaw in '79, I bought the jointer in '87. I don't know when I got all of the hubs. I'm just starting to use the SS again after about 10 years of infrequent use.)

Another consideration thrown in- My lower hub is solid on one end. The hole does not go all the way through. A long time ago I was told by one of the knowledgeable gals at Shopsmith - it also acts as a heat sink.
Octogenarian's have an earned right to be a curmudgeon.
