Bandsaw Mounting Tube Question

After looking at one of mine, the longer end is inserted into the bandsaw. The offset is about 3/4" below the bottom of the case. The shorter end is about 2", and the longer end is about 4 1/4(?)"(I did not take one out to measure accurately). I believe they are a bit shorter than the one Dusty posted, but not much.

I have noticed this mechanical stop inside the bandsaw. I think it is interesting that the correct length mounting tubes (yours) do not go all the way to the stop. I would think it would be desirable to have the mounting tubes go all the way to this stop because they would also be going through the second set of bored out mounting tabs/bosses inside the cast housing. This would make the bandsaw mounting more rigid and less likely to have the casting break at the bottom.

I could allow the eccentric to insert all the way to the stop but then I would have to adjust the band saw height by changing the level of insertion on the lower tubes. I don't want to do that because I would then have to mess with height adjustment every time I mounted/remounted the bandsaw. This way, the adjustment is made with the eccentric tubes inserted all the way to the offset in the Mark V and I adjust for penetration into the band saw. I can not mount/remount the band saw with no height adjustment being necessary.

Unless I move the band saw to a power stand or Power Station. Then we start all over.

FWIW, my manual says to raise the bandsaw on the tubes(resting firmly on the spt mount casting) to vertically align the shafts.

In my case that lowers the tubes slightly below the stop, but not far enough to exit the upper bore.

Therefore the set screws 'support' all the weight.

I think shim washers would be better to take the load.

You can see in my second photo that the gap is significant. About a 1/4" I would guess. Not exact a shim washer. I absolutely agree that not relying on the set screws to hold that weight would be better and having the tubes extend up into the upper bore would too.

My concern, if the tubes were extended up til they contact the mechanical stop what mechanical support is lost on the lower end of the tubes. My band saw is not exactly vertically stable as it is. Raising the eccentrics in the lower bores would make it even less stable (I think).

Yes, it does. Thanks, Dusty! The long ones I have must be for a different special purpose tool. Any ideas? I will order the right ones tonight.

If you don't have plans for these tubes, I would cut just enough off to allow, alignment while maintaining full insertion into the Band saw, and the mount on your SS.

"Shopsmith customer service would not give out this info through email".

This was a comment allegedly made by Shopsmith to a member seeking information about the eccentric tubes for his band saw. He apparently had asked how long the legs were supposed to be on his band saw eccentric tubes (5137779). They would not provide that information. Maybe he should have called.

Can anyone tell me why Shopsmith would not provide the answer to that question? There must be some logical reason but it certainly escapes me. I have had some very informative discussions with both of the ladies in CS and never sensed a reluctance on their part to provide information. Their cooperation and help provided has been excellent.

I was denied information on the Main Table Flatness specification but I see that as a different issue.

Be careful with the posts when inserting them into the bandsaw. As you can see, the previous owner of mine was not... Dimpled the casting thru the back...
