Second try to make a bowl

This is actually my second bowl. The first one turned out to have straight vertical sides and also a vertical inside and flat bottom. Because of many catches and chip outs, I was ver frustrated. My daughter-in-law was very happy to get it. I am not very proud. When DIL called to say how much she liked the bowl, I laughed when she told me it also works as a pedestal. So my first bowl turned out to be nothing more than a hollowed out pedestal.

Then I shelled out for a bowl gouge and tried again. This time with a plan from Woodsmith archives. It is supposed to be a fruit bowl.

Yes, probably the slower possible speed of the PowerPro probably helped somewhat. The size of the blank was 12" by 12" inches and 4 inches deep.

Yes, I tried to undercut the rim as shown in the sketch, but my undercut isn't quite rounded.

After while I will post more pics after I can figure out the upside down stuff.

Man! This new forum format is confusing for me. Yea! a new learning curve!!!

Wow, I'm truly impressed. I have a bowl gouge but can't say I figured it out even after reading up on it. I'd just squires my ss and was still nervous around the new noisy machine, but was surprised how bad it turned out. You inspire me to try again (after the rest of my list though).

Hi Fitz! I didn't dare try a bowl gouge until I viewed a video that is here on the forum. Here's the reference I have in my notepad. "for videos on bowl gouge see Thread named "Turning Plates" by moggymatt dated 10-17-14". It is in this "Beginning Woodworking" part of the forum. Man this new format is hard to learn. Steep learning curve.

- I hope the three photos will show here. They show the finish as well as the remains of the 12" x 12" blank after the round bowl was sawn out.

Nice piece! The pedestal base and undercut rim take it from ordinary to extraordinary. I'm not going to show those photos to my wife until I have time to make a replica!

Now that photos are working again, I can see the bowl-blank remains. How thick was the blank? At the angle seen in the photo, the bowl looks about twice as thick as the blank.

Gotta comment; the learning curve for me on using this new forum format is a tough thing to climb.

Photos from my I-Phone and "Windows 8.1" are pretty new to me. Combine them with this new format and I'm a bit lost. Throw in health issues and results are S-L-O-W learning.

I've only watched the first of those videos but WOW! Thank you for linking those!

I'd watched a number of YouTube videos but not a one actually went into the details of how the tool hits the wood. This one does, and in a way that let's you grasp the 'how' (tool at this angle, this rotation, etc.) and, ultimately even more important, the 'why', and not just the what 'what' ("the bevel should be rubbing... ") like all the rest I'd found. I grasped what was meant by the bevel rubbing but that ended up being almost useless without a lot of other information.
And now I've got to wait until after the new year to try due to obligations... Life is not fair

The bowl turned out great... He's right, the details out it over the top, especially the lip. It doesn't look like a novice Turner made it, that's for sure. Keep it up. And keep showing the results.

I watched the skew chisel videos from the same wood turner and they also do a far better job than others I've seen, so again I thank you for sharing the link. I'm making some quick little hair picks now with that understanding as a present for my mother in law... Think short, elaborate chopsticks. She adds beads etc. and sells them (along with other jewelry she makes) at galleries and art fairs but often can't find the wood pick parts, and when she can they are pricey for a turned stick... So this is a quick last minute extra gift.
Anyhow, I was telling my wife about your bowl and lucked out when I tried to show her how great yours looks when mine is an amorphous glob of wood that is probably round if you catch it from just the right angle, on a good day, in just the right light, and squint to the pount of closing your eyes completely.... None of the photos on the forum were showing up at all! My ego was saved another blow . She, being what can only be diagnosed (considering how bad my attempt was) as pathologically supportive, was saved from having to say "wow, so you were trying to make something like that? I guess when you said you'd made a bowl I heard bowel and thought you'd sculpted a turd. I was impressed how turd-like you got something to look using the lathe. Now, well, I'm just, um... well... Uh, how about I leave you home when I go to the family's for Xmas this year... I kinda just sorta don't really want to be seen in public with you just now, Love."

... Or something like that.

Anyhow, thanks for the inspiration and information. I'm excited to give it another try.

There are a few Utube videos by a fellow named Brenden Stemp from Australia. One of his videos is titled "no catch bowl turning"
It is a very good tutorial and he explains in slow motion exactly how a catch occurs as well as the mechanics of a catch. He also explains the tool grind that he uses and how to grind a tool to his specs. Worth a good hard look.
