Scrollsaw rebuild questions and (hopefully) progress

Post by paulrussell »

Seems like when one is shopping old Shopsmith gear, the seller sometimes "throws in" something else just to clear garage space. So it was a few years ago when I bought my SS planer. The seller tossed in a freestanding SS Scrollsaw (grey edition).

It functioned reasonably well, but the blower was kaput. On the heels of rebuilding my bandsaw I let the momentum move me and today the scrollsaw is a pile of parts -- some soaking in soapy water, some soaking in Evapo-rust, and others letting a night of penetrating oil do their work.

When I got down into the drive system things were pretty rusty. I decided to remove the flywheel(s) and clean everything up as best I could.

Now, while I'm at this point MAYBE I should replace the main bearings. They are 0.5 ID, 1.125 OD, and .375 wide. My question would be what bearings would be suitable replacement. A scrollsaw is a pretty light-duty machine, and 11 bucks per bearing from SS seems a bit high. But maybe that's what it will take. Opinions welcome.

(PS: They are bears to get in/out, but I'm a bit worried that the penetration oil used to free up the shafts has gotten into the bearings..)

Paul
Look at the VXB website and look at their kit 21047 For the bearing you want. They may be the ones you are looking for
