floating sheave

Post by the torch »

My floating sheave seems to wobble and rattle.
Is a bushing worn out or a bearing shot?
May need to replace the belt, bought the machine new in 71`
About 20 years ago I did take the, snap, ring washer, and spring off.
That was a pain to replace

Wobble and rattle is likely caused by a worn keyway in the floating sheave.

When I had the snap ring and spring off I did change both belts.
That is so long ago that I don`t remember the configuration on the shaft.
I also need to know the best way to compress the spring to get the washer
and snap ring back on.

Try this method, it worked for me.

I ordered a floating sheave, long key, spacer. and belt.
IS the long key held in place by a set screw?
I also built a board with a hole that fits over the shaft.
The snap ring WILL go through the hole but the washer and spring do not.
beeg suggested the board method, it seams to do the job. [did a small test]

Yes. The key extends into the keyway in the FAN sheave hub and is secured by the fan sheave set screw. Really torque it!!! Blue locktite recommended(by me).

I can`t even get an allen wrench between the sheave and the end cap on the motor. Do I need to split the motor to get at the set screw? I checked between the splines on the sheave to see if the set screw was hiding. It`s not there.

I don't remember a set screw at all when I took out and replaced the key. Is the set screw only on older (or Newer) models?

Mine was from 1999 if my memory is accurate.

There is a hole in the bottom of the motor pan that provides access to that set screw on the hub of the fan sheave.

The fan sheave butts up against the spacer. The key extends into the keyway of the fan sheave. The setscrew secures both the key and the sheave to the motor shaft.
