Another addition to the stable

Well I bought my third and final 510 yesterday. This one will be for just a stand alone drill press. It is essentially brand new. Many items including the lathe duplicator was still in an unopened box. Came with no spt’s but a ton of the usual accessories. Absolutely no rust. It is the model with the red switch and the pulleys were frozen in position but loosened up immediately with a little oil and care. The motor drive belt has a permanent hump in it from sitting so long and has the accompanying vibration so I ordered a new belt but they are on backorder until 4/3. It had a Shopsmith apron still wrapped up in the plastic ! Everything appears completely unused so I think it was ordered and never actually set up. Nothing is aligned so I will go through the set up process from scratch today. There is not a speck of dust inside the housing. The plan is to build a vertical cabinet with drawers on the bottom, take the legs off and bolt it to the cabinet in the vertical position. My thought is to put four bolts through the existing holes in the casting. Has anyone tried this ? The casting is a little thin at that point. I am going to turn the headstock around and put the pivot end at the top and the latch at the bottom for safety’s sake . Definitely open for opinions here.

I have a dedicated drill with the headstock turned on the way tubes and mounted on the original legs. One of my someday projects is to build a stand/cabinet as you describe. I will be following this post with interest.
Please post progress reports and picture of finished cabinet.

This has come up before. I would be inclined to make an insert that would fit inside the pivot casting where the leg normally goes. The insert can then be bolted to the base cabinet and the casting screwed to the insert using the original leg mounting holes.

Do you mean to do vertically something like the Shop Deputy Work Center Conversion Kit does for Horizontal mounting?

I had considered doing one of these in drill press mode on the end of a bench and drop it back down when I needed to power up a SPT for a quick run.

Obviously I need longer than 26" tubes for a carriage etc.

I had toyed with making a turret for it.

Anybody 'seen' the 'plans for building a base'?

A handful of short angle iron clips should work(layout/positioning might be an issue).
