So Wr2crk would you recommend or not recommend the mandrel saver? So the one Penn State sells is compatible with the Shopsmith mandrel they sell?

Lots of way to turn pens. A SS Lathe is a lathe after all. If you can hold the work securely, you can turn it.

I would not tell someone not to buy the mandrel saver. It's just that I was not thrilled with it. When using it on the SS the mandrels are sometimes too long and as a result when turning a short project a long length of the mandrel will extend through the saver. When the quill is released to remove the turning and the quill is fully retracted the mandrel is still in the saver and the headstock has to be moved to remove the turning. I found this to be really annoying in a short period of time. Happens when turning the shorter blanks such as ones for the bullet pen.

If moisture content is good and it is sound(CA can fix that), yes.

I have mixed feeling regarding the mandrel saver. To correct the short barrel problem add a few spacers or a section of pen tube. I find that I get slippage when turning the blank so a lot of tension from the quill is needed. This is ok if you get a catch and will more than likely save your blank but can slow down the roughing part of turning. Not all that bad but if you are short on time to get your pen or pens done it can be irritating.

I don't think so. putting extra pressure on the mandrel saver does not put the mandrel under pressure only extra compression pressure on the turning stock. However if way too many spacers are used then It can put some pressure on the mandrel due to the turning assembly including the spacers may try to move sideways and thus bend the mandrel. You could try to cut the mandrel to shorten the assembly if you do a lot of production work.
