Arbor Press for Bearing Replacement?
I need to replace some bearings on my Mark V. I've seen the videos and read the posts about bearings and I'm comfortable diving into this project. However I do not have a bearing press or puller. Since there are other uses for a manual arbor press (such as lathe turning projects) and I don't want to buy a hydraulic press, do you think an arbor press will work?
Any one try using a manual 1 ton arbor press for pressing Shopsmith bearings?
How about this one?

A more common/useful option.

Arbor presses are great for pressing bearings just make sure that you have the clearance. I actually pressed my motor bearings on with a pipe clamp but it is rather tricky to keep everything lined up.

Thanks. The reason I asked about the arbor press is I'm looking for a tool that has more than one purpose. Specifically can an arbor press do the job or not? Can it remove and press back on bearings? Looking for anyone who has used an arbor press, like the one I linked to, to replace their Shopsmith bearings.

Greasemonkey,
Thanks. The HF arbor press looks like it has a cut out in the front to accommodate clearance. It also has a plate that has different sized slots for different sized shafts. Wondering if the shafts for the Shopsmith will fit in the slots.

Consider pressing bearings onto the motor armature shaft. I do not think that press will do that. For sure it would not enable removing(pulling) them off the motor shaft.

Re: Arbor Press for Bearing Replacement?
I have another version of the arbor press but pretty much the same thing. I also have the other kit that was posted.
The kit is a better investment so far as I'm concerned. It is a more recent purchase that I went with while working on a 10ER. I've sense used it on other jobs and is my go to tool now when I need that function.
The press has limitation due to height and depth for some jobs, but it works for a lot of projects and I have had one for many many years. It was my go to tool before getting the kit. I still like to have it around for doing other jobs but I could see living without it.
So if we are voting I vote for the kit.

I didn't realize that the puller/separator kit could be used to press bearings back on to a shaft. Do you just flip the shaft around and pull from the other end? Use your own threaded rod for longer shafts, I'm guessing?reible wrote:I have another version of the arbor press but pretty much the same thing. I also have the other kit that was posted.

I'd think that a proper-sized tube would still be needed to ensure that all the pressing is done against the inner race. Any problems keeping that aligned while starting the bearing on the shaft?

The included parts were long enough for me to install new bearings on the quill (double bearing quill). No problems just touching the inner race and with alignment. Works great!

Re: Arbor Press for Bearing Replacement?
I only needed longer 'spacers' when installing bearings on the Mark VII motor. It is a double ended shaft(second shaft drives vacuum blower).
A proper sized pipe can also be used to drive them on. I prefer the more gentle 'pressing'.
