If I was in the market and if I knew that the warranty was available on this kit and if the advertised shipping is real, I would jump on this at $850. That is just barely over 50% of new.

It is the ifs that keep me from being interested.

The risks are high, what if you go to all the trouble to install and it goes poof?

I actually am the one that bid it to $620.00 and the auto bid was still going strong so I stopped there. I figured it would go well beyond what I was willing to give. A second one at a low price would have been cool. It sure is nice to dream once in a while. :D

I am on the verge of buying one right now so this interests me. Can ShopSmith not identify the purchase date from the headstock serial #556177?
Certainly their inventory control is at least that good.
As far as real widow or sales pitch, while I undrestand the sentiment, once something like this hits the market .... market forces (supply/demand etc.) take over and that, sadly perhaps, is all that will determine the price.
Personally, I'll bet it gets just about what it's worth- all things (warrantee, pig in a poke status, etc.) considered.
It certainly has me thinking.

556177 is the part number not the serial number. SS now uses a date for the serial number and that begs the question "Do they only make one machine a day?".

Hmmm... My part number is 556176 not 556177. Did the OP do a typo?

Yours may be a bit older and it is a model # so perhaps it is from the next batch maybe with subtle changes/new model number.
Anyway, same question:
Can SS not get the invoice date (or at least a date of sale range if more than one share the mfg date) from the mfg date stated June 10 2013?
Do you know if it is month - day or day - month on yours?
I' guessing it is Jan 8 rather than August 1 because of the above model number clues but unless someone can chime in with a date using a number greater than twelve, it would be a guess.

Once again; What Shopsmith told me was that they needed the last name of the person who bought it and the zip code it was shipped to, in order to identify which unit it was and transfer the warranty to the eBay buyer.

I don't know why their system is set up that way, but that's what it is. I personally would not buy it for what the bid is already if the seller can't obtain and provide that info to both the buyer and to Shopsmith.

Those IF's are as Dusty stated above, too big to not nail down first.

I think I have to call SS tomorrow and work something out. With the date of mfg. the worst case would be about two and a half years. That drops the value but it's hard to say how much.

Kind of makes me think of Dirty Harry ........ You all know the line.

...... Well do I ?

To clarify the part numbers, there are four ways to get PowerPro Upgrade and each method has its own part number.

556176 New PowerPro Headstock ... $2,119.00
556189 Refurbished PowerPro Headstock ... $1,949.00
556178 Your Headstock Reconditioned and Upgraded to PowerPro ... $1,749.00
556177 Do-It-Yourself PowerPro Upgrade Kit ... $1,649.00

If two years are gone, the only remaining warranty is the pro-rated portion remaining on the motor, as the electronics and all other parts are only under a two year warranty.

FYI - A replacement motor (warrantied 5 years) is $737.00 plus freight and on back-order presently due to demand for new units in manufacturing and upgrades.
