Wood Magzine in the June/July issue 2015 had a nice picture/text write up on "choose the right glue"..

I know there are many articles out there, but this looked and presented well. Does anybody have a PDF of page 29 of this issue.

It will also pass the bar for occasional moisture resistance. Anyone who has tried to reverse hide glue with the required combination of heat and water will know that it is not as easy as it sounds. Reversibility is one of the great advantages of hide glues but you do have to work at it.

I think they mean that with the application of either a little heat or moisture (or both) a hide glue joint should be able to be freed. That's why is so popular with instrument builders--with hide glue, if you damage something you can take it apart and fix it.

I fully understand the reversibility feature of hot hide glue. My point was simply that it is not a simple matter of adding a little moisture or heat.

That was a great video. I have a question - I'd like to try hide glue. Is there a big difference in stregnth or quality between the mix your own and the modified that's already a gel in the bottle? In the brands? Thanks and I saw some pics of your marquetry (sp?) it is amazing.

Thanks Rod. Liquid hide glue is the same stuff as what you buy in granular form except that it has additives (urea mostly) that reduce its gel temperature and increase its open time.

There is no significant difference in srrength. Both are tremendously strong.

There are differences though in that there are several things that can be done with hot hide glue that cannot be done with liquid hide glue. One is hammer veneering which allows you to apply veneer with no press, vacuum bag, or clamps, even on completed pieces of furniture. It is a very important advantage of HHG.

Another is the rub joint where you can basically just press pieces together for a second and then leave them with no clamping and get a perfectly strong bond that can be handled after a very short time.

These operations depend on the very high initial tack that HHG gets from the initial cooling part of its cure. LHG does not have that feature.

Awesome - thank you! My interest at the moment is limited to making basic repairs to antique furniture pieces handed down to my wife. The higher tack of the HHG seems to be a big advantage, and it doesn't appear to be a lot more difficult to use. I also like the idea that leftovers can just cool and be used later.
