Carriage is missing controls!

Hi. I just purchased a Mark V looks like produced in Feb 1982 Serial # 116361 and I'm looking for a carriage assembly on Ebay and most are marked for use on a 500 model. How do I tell which model I have also does any one know of a good source for used parts besides Ebay? I'm also looking for some 4 inch jointer blades and a manual for this model. Thanks for any help.

The model number should be on the vent plate on the left end of the headstock. Check there to start but if the previous owner made upgrades then model number may be insignificant. (Edit: Added two additional pictures. Also note that some headstocks may be a later model as with one of my shorties. It has a 510 headstock and a 500 carriage. Poor quality photo brown is not rust) A picture of what you have would help in identification. Here are a couple of pictures from ebay of cariages.

Redleg, I gotta ask: what is that coupling the bandsaw to the headstock?
And is that tubular extension around the bandsaw's shaft a normal part of later bandsaws? I've never noticed it in a photo (I've got the old cast iron bandsaw).

Mntnbiker, welcome! you will find the folk here can answer any question you have about shopsmiths. They're often even right!

I'm not clear on what you mean by the carraige missing controls. Did your shopsmith come with a carraige? Is it just the handles that screw in - a straight rod with a plastic handle on one end and threads on the other? Or are you missing more?

Jointer blades: I finally found a spare set for sale on ebay. From what I've seen (and paid) you don't often save much over new with jointer blades, and you can wait a long time. I guess it is because it is something that does get worn down, and that many people want a spare set of so they can keep working without pausing to sharpen when they chip one in their original set, or send them off for sharpening when dull if they don't sharpen their own. Other parts are quite cheap to buy used and can almost always be found. Just never the ones you actually want. hmm.

That is an old Shopsmith Power Coupler similar to Shopsmith Power Coupler Kit 555124. It does have a Shopsmith label on it. The tubular extension is a guard for the band saw shaft that came on the band saw I bought with my Power Pro about 2 1/2 years ago. I think it may cause problems when raising a 500 model vertical with the band saw in place if you do not have offset tubes on the band saw.

Yeah, it does look like it would cause problems raising. I don't recall seeing a coupler like that. Guess I was hoping you'd found a nice cheap replacement. I recently partially stripped my only one. Oh well. Time to order one.

Thanks Redleg. I have a 1982 Mark V 500, I found a carriage on ebay and ordered new jointer blades and a 5/8ths arbour from SS so i should be in good shape by the end of the week!

How far does the new bandsaw shaft guard extend out from the bandsaw casing?

Since it is in the center, the tie bar may clear it. With a 'normal' size base, the tie bar would have less clearance(longer arc due ti longer pivot length).
