I currently have a Mark V 520 or do I? I purchased a Mark v 510 and then after many years of faithful and reliable service I purchased the Pro Fence Upgrade complete with an adjustable Direct Reading Rip Scale.
I now I have a Mark V 520 but I've recently been told - No, you have a Mark V 510. Just look up the serial number; Shopsmith says you have a Mark V 510.
If I take the serial number off, can you tell a 510 from a 520? If you think you can, please tell me how.
Is it a 520 or is it a 510

Suffering from 520 envy or other serious deficiency disorder?
Quick Rx....Pack up that "520" and ship immediately to Nick for donation to another needy kid.
I'm sure he'll arrange for a new genuine 520 shipped back upon receipt of your full payment. You sure could ask for an autographed picture and certificate. He's a great guy.
Hey, a guy has to do what he has to do....Life is too short, No?

A 520 has "the Pro Fence Upgrade complete with an adjustable Direct Reading Rip Scale".
At one time when you did the upgrade you got a new serial number sticker (I did when I upgraded from a 500 to 510) but I don't think they do that anymore.

Seems like this is another example of - "Why you should never believe everything you are told!"
But you can believe - "If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, IT IS A DUCK!! - or - If it has rails like a 520 and a fence like a 520, IT IS A 520.
Sounds like serial number envy to me.

Anyone who issues false passports, birth certificates, library cards, etc. should be able to help you out with a new serial number. Look in the Yellow Pages under "forgery."

Hi dusty,
I know this is knot exactly an active thread, but after thinking about this again, I have an opinion to offer: First off, they are ALL Mark V's. Secondly, the 500 table system is no longer offered. And lastly, ShopSmith currently makes the Mark V available in three variations: The 505 system, with no floating tables or connecting tubes; the 510 system, with the floating tables and connecting tubes, and; the 520 system, with floating tables, connecting tubes and an improved rail and fence system. IMHO, the Mark V is the same, regardless of which table system you have. A person can buy a basic unit, with the 505 table system, having the option to upgrade to an improved table system at any time, or buy a unit that comes with either the 510 or 520 upgrades already included. I wood offer that you own a Mark V with the 520 table system (since you did the upgrade). If you want to say that you have a "model 520", I wood knot argue the fact with you. As long as all the parts are there, you have what you have. A rose by any other name...

It's a Mark V 510 with all the current upgrades and then some; check the serial number.

Which is which???
Jim has solved the biggest problem facing owners and non-owners alike. What is the difference between the models? The data tag and description therein describes what was originally purchased and not what it is today. The description Jim used needs to be spread around. The serial # will tell you when it was made giving you a starting point in determining which of the various upgrades it has from the factory only. Everything else that has been added merely improves on the original.
If a 520 is only a 520 because of the tables, and you have the tables, then you have a 520. Congratulations.
Missing accessories not withstanding. Does not apply to non-standard hardware used in the manufacture or upgrade of this unit. May not apply in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands. These opinions are not necessarily those of the manufacturers of this product. Some assembly required.
