Note to Admin

Post by charlese »

I tried to find a reference to a 510 rip fence to add to a post. It appears there is no way we could order a 510 rip fence from the Shopsmith site.

Please add this item to the SS web site.

CORRECTION - Please see if you can make this fence easier to find.

Thanks, Ron! whoda thunk that to find a 510 fence you must first find a fence for a 520. I even looked at the 500 to 510 upgrade. Guess there's no fence included in the upgrade. That's a crime!!!

One of the links I provide in the Buying a Used Shopsmith Revisited post http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/viewt ... 90#p185690 has the information also.

Select the link for Mark 7 - Mark V 520 with 510-505 - 500 Rip Fence Comparison, and open the comparison PDF.

The PDF has all 4 Rip Fences shown, but three (3) with their part numbers - as the original 500 fence is no longer available (except eBay etc.) and has been replaced with the new style 555646 with T-Slots but fits the older smaller 500 tables.

This is the kind of value I was trying to add in creating the exploded parts diagrams and comparison diagrams, as you often don't fully understand what you don't know, and a picture (ok, illustration), is often better than a thousand words.

Yes, there are a couple unknown, hidden ways to find a 510 fence, but don't we think it should be a single listed product listed under "Rip Fences"? Just as easy to find as a non-Shopsmith miter gauge?

It is kinda a shame that it is easier to find an Incra miter gauge or a Kreg Bandsaw fence than a 501 rip fence.

I took your 510 Rip Fence Example and created a post in the Community Forum that should give you a way to find pretty much anything you need on Shopsmith and other sites.

Read the PDF in http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/viewt ... 77#p193477 and see what is possible if you step out of the first Search Box that we see.

That's just fine. Everett, BUT--- Don't you think that a SIMPLE, one site method would be better? My thought is - Any item produced by Shopsmith should be simple to locate on the Company's web site without first going to another site. Consideration should be foremost toward those newer Shopsmith users who are relatively un-schooled on the Shopsmith site and are confused easily by part terminology of parts. Maybe they just bought a used 510 without a fence. Don't we want to keep them as Shopsmith users for a long-long time? Why make things more difficult?

I can remember those days when I thought The word "fence" was an adequate description of a "Rip Fence".

Comm-on! Is there another Shopsmith tool that cannot be found directly on the Shopsmith site?

Website search engines sometimes require tweaking to produce good results. I have checked and adjusted results for the more popular search terms, but the 510 Rip Fence hadn't yet come up on that list (although after the mention here on the forum I suspect it might next time :) ).

A quick check didn't show why the page for this item doesn't show in the first few pages of results. I have made a note to investigate further the next time I work on search results.

I really do not believe that the issue here has to do with search engine short comings so much as I do the format of the Shopsmith Online Parts Catalog.

If I go to the old hard copy catalog, I don't have this sort of problem. Like items are located together in a "section" of the catalog. I feel that the Online Catalog should be the same way. Go to the index, look up fence, search through the list of fences and there will be a 510 rip fence. Aah just what I want.

The new website, along with the new catalog format has thrown us all a curve.

Tell me, if you need a fence to use on your Mark V, do you really start looking for that fence in the "Service and Repair Parts" section. That is where the 510 fence was finally located.

Thank you for the note to yourself. And the notice! As always, your efforts are appreciated. :)

I know guys in a similar situation as mikec182 (see post #193284) will also appreciate your effort.
