quill slop??
I have a Mark V 1981 vintage. I notice the quill moves (1/16 IN) back and forth by hand when stationary. Does the ring with the hole puddied in compensate for that? Did it come lose and needs to be loosened up and moved closer to the head stock? Or is it a worse problem?

Re: quill slop??
Yes it can minimize the slop.
Requires pulling out on the shaft, pushing in on the collar, and tightening the set screw at the bottomed out position of the screw on the flat(there is a second flat for that setscrew separate(but aligned with) from the exposed quill shaft).
There is a 5/32"(surprise!!!
) set screw under that putty.
