Hi All
Shopsmith has special pricing on their sharpener guide and their sharpener kit until midnight tonight.
I was wondering if anyone has ever tried the sharpener guide on the belt sander and how you liked it?

I have the lathe chisel sharpener and have used it with the disk sander. I, personally don't like it. For two reasons.
1) if your chisel blade is too short, it won't reach all the way through the slots.. I have some old chisels that I got from my grandpa that just can't be sharpened with that jig.
2) the rolling action when sharpening the gouges feels awkward to me. I usually end up messing up my gouges profile with that jig

Thanks, I was aware of the "short"comings regarding the length of the tools. I was hoping that someone might have tried it using the belt sander.

The latest vintage of the "De Cristoforo" book "Power Tool woodworking for Everyone" has a whole section on using the belt sander.

Ah, but does it address my question? The old book I have also had a whole section on the belt sander, but it did not address my question.

It works for me. I have not used it extensively, but it has done well for the tools I have sharpened with it. The book does address your question .... 
If a Mark V is used, you have to drill holes in the extension table to sharpen certain tools with the disk sander. With the beltsander, I think that you can sharpen all of them, but again, I have not personally done so .... hopefully someone who has used it extensively will chime in.

No personal use on the belt sander.
Here is a link to the current manual and shows the belt sander setup:

The sharpener manual I believe has a section on the belt sander but I don't have a copy here to check that out....
I have used the system with the 12" disk sander and it will work for you that way, they also show it mounted on a strip sander but again I have no first hand knowledge of that either.

I agree with both these criticisms. And I'll add a third: you can't get the really fine grits (at least from Shopsmith) for the belt sander or the disc sander you need to really sharpen lathe chisels.richardrouse wrote:I have the lathe chisel sharpener and have used it with the disk sander. For these reasons I was never able to use the sharpening guides to get good results.
On the other hand, I picked up a used Shopsmith strip sander and the chisel sharpening attachment that is sold specifically for it and I had success right off the bat.
Gale's Law: The bigger the woodworking project, the less the mistakes show in any photo taken far enough away to show the entire project!

I have the SS sharpening attachment and do not like it for the same reason richard rouse mentioned. I use the Oneway system with a Rikon lo speed grinder and it works much better. I wish I had the money I misspent while finding my way to proper sharpening.
Also I do not like a flat bevel on my lathe tools. I find the concave bevel easier to hone the cutting edge by placing the credit card sized diamond sharpening plate on the heel and the cutting edge and honing the edge. It restores the edge with a few strokes and saves a lot of grinding which saves tool lengrh.
