ER Bearings

My latest to the stable, I pulled the spindle pulley, needed to replace it do to a large part of the larger diam part is missing and did not want the off balance/vibration. To the question, it exposed the end bearing, outer race is silver, inner race is blue, it does not look like my others which are all silver, I called the guy I bought it from a few days ago to ask him if they were replaced since his grandfather bought it new, must be out of town/deer hunting. What do you think? OBTW I did not have my glasses on but I think it said SKI then a #.

How does it feel when rotated? What else matters?

If you are concerned, replace it/both.

More likely SKF, a large bearing manufacturer.

Blue is the result of heat. I would not use them even if they felt "good". They can feel "good" in the head stock because all of that cast iron mass has a tendency to mask the roughness. When you get the bearing out it feels like crap. Even if there is no blue after 60+ years the grease is gone or no good. I plan to replace all the bearings on all my 10ERs (including the motors) with new OEM bearings. The OEM bearing for the drive sleeve is a Fafnir #205KLL2 . Timken bought Fafnir a few years ago so if you specify Fafnir and get a Timken branded box it should/may say Fafnir on the bearing.

A & W Bearings is what Skip Campbell recommended to me. I went with them and they are great. Just remember to tell them you want OEM not a substitute and they will deliver.

The difference in price? OEM Timken bearings for the drive sleeve are $27 each from A & W. Sellers on eBay including SS sellers have them for 1/2 that or less but they are not Timken.

The bearings in the machine are the heart of the machine so why compromise? I will not.

Thanks all and yes SKF and the blue is not from heat I know the difference, it is like a machine dye blue. But take all into concentration, and thanks, still a bit cold here to play with it.
