Hi Chris,
If you are like me, you do knot want to change the grit of the sandpaper, due to the fact that you ruin a perfectly good piece of it to change it out. My solution, and a somewhat costly one, is to have a different steel disk for each grit. That way, you change the disks as you progress with the sanding operation without destroying the sandpaper. There are three different grits available for the conical sanding disk, which requires three steel disks.

Similarly, I have three flat sanding steel disks; one I use with the velcro system for interchanging the three different grits when necessary, and the other two I use for the two different cloth backed sanding disks for sharpening.

So, I have invested a tidy sum in having 3 steel conical disks and 3 steel flat disks, but in the long run, I save money because I do knot have to change out the paper sanding disks until they wear out.

Good call, Gents,

I have a total of 3 flat discs but only 1 conical disk. I may get more conicals. It bears saying again (I've heard it before), the conical disk is one of the neatest, most value-added gadgets you can get for the Mark V.

"I downloaded the plans but can't quite see how to attach the opposite end from the handle? Why the 7/16" cut out in the base? Is that how he came up with the 5 degrees? Also what angle do you think he used on the other end of the piece he made that fits in the 3/4" Dado? to prop up the other end?"

Suggest you simply left-click on the plans and let them open in Acrobat Reader. You'll be able to magnify them as much as you want. Some of this may become clearer to you.

"...can't quite see how to attach the opposite end from the handle?"
I don't know what this means. The handle is attached with #10 flathead wood screws (FHWS). The rest of the jig is glued together.

"Why the 7/16" cut out in the base?"
There is no 7/16" cut-out in the base. There is a rabbet in the edge of the base. In this rabbet, I have glued a rib that is 3/4" wide and 7/16" tall at the peak of the angle.

"...what angle do you think he used on the other end of the piece he made that fits in the 3/4" Dado?"
The top surfaces of both ribs -- the short rib (7/16") and the tall rib (1-5/32") are cut at 5 degrees, matching the slope of the carrier board.

It is definitely not made for it, but if it fits, I dokn't know why knot. I do knot have #555116; I always have ran the disk up to the edge of the table.
