quill shaft stuck in drive sleeve

quill shaft stuck in drive sleeve

Well, this is a strange one, guys!

I was removing the drive sleeve from my headstock and use the quill shaft to knock it loose. Seems like it didn't go in right? I didn't really check it much when I put it into the drive sleeve because of the keying.

The quill shaft is properly in the drive sleeve in terms of the keyed shafts matching up, but is not fully inserted into the drive sleeve. The sucker just won't come out though, I'm at a total loss. Ideas anyone?

The first thing that comes to mind is why didn't you clean the parts? There is no full insertion. The shaft is supposed to slide (EASILY) in the drive sleeve. Drill press. Kroil or other penetrating oil, get it apart, clean the parts, lubricate and reassemble. Should fix the problem.

Assuming you have a cast iron vise, slip the splined shaft between the jaws and drop the drive sleeve and shaft down so the drive sleeve catches on the vise jaws tops. Inertia should allow the shaft to exit.

Repeat until successful. ;)

Definitely, I'll be cleaning everything more thoroughly as I continue disassembly. I was only lightly cleaning prior to this and here I am!

That quill in particular was very stubborn to clean up at all. PB blaster was used and the grease really stayed. I wasn't paying too much attention to the quill shaft I picked because they both came out quite easily when I took them out of the headstocks. Oh well.

Great idea! I have a small cast iron vice that should do the trick.

EDIT:

Got it out! The grease was acting as a glue. Turns out I have a really big angle vice lying around which I used in conjunction with two smaller vices to get enough leverage and push the two pieces apart. Crazy how strongly they held together! Will post pictures later if anyone is curious.
