Dead Man Walking (Until My Wife Finds Out)

Post by Steamdragon »

Saw an add for a undetermined shopsmith near my office. The guy basically said come convince me why you are making me a good offer. Thinking it was someone cleaning out granddads basement and they found and old er10 or something I decided to go see if there were any accessories they would sell separate.
Holy Crud!
First off it is a Mark V from 1981, which I don't need but there are boxes upon boxes of accessories. Shaper blades lathe plates, lathe duplicator, belt sander, biscuit joiner, 1-2 dozen lathe turning tools of various shapes, dados, arbors, extra material handling tools, on and on.
The tubes on the unit itself are spotless and shiny and other than some dust from sitting overall very clean.
I told him straight out if he has time and can wait he could possibly get $800-$1200 (from what I have seen on CL) or he could possibly move it fast for $500-$600. He has said he would let me name my price and even give me time for my next check to come in to do a 1/2 now 1/2 later and haul it off now. He needs it gone now so I can probably get it for $500.
Here is the DMW part. I am still 3 months into the great garage/shop/dance studio overhaul and not done yet. We don't need another Mark 5 but all those goodies. I am sure there is $500 just in the lathe tools and shaper blades.
Well if I suddenly stop posting you will know why, she killed me when she found out. If that is the case save a few drops of your favorite beverage and drop them onto a sawdust pile and turn down your glass to a comrade who fell in the line of the cause.

Very similar situation is why I still have a Mark V hidden in a friend's garage. Find a single friend with a two-stall garage who doesn't woodwork--he'll have the room. ;)

First off, STAY SINGLE!!! Now with that said, and horse is out of the barn anyway, never and I mean never ask for permission, it is like pleading no contest, you are still consider guilty. They love to for give you a bit after you have to swallow the medicine. Remind her of what her shoes and purses cost compared to yours and not needing any purses.
Buy it and parts out what you dont want, and show her the break even or even a profit on it.

I hate to agree with such a rant, but I have found it easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. And those purses are OUTRAGEOUS.

That was no rant, that is the facts of married life in most cases till you get past 20 + years.
Purses, I was at a Marshall Fields or Nordstrums and check out something it the womens department a few weeks ago, there was a line of leather purses, Michael Nicole, they were beautiful and top quality, just a little 4x6" hand purse was 250$, then if you got into anything larger with a strap $399 on up into 500$+ ish.
I am glad I was not born a woman, because I like fashion, and would have shoes and purses galore, and broke.

STAY SINGLE. I think not. Find the rite woman. They are out there. WE have a dedicated 30 X 40 shop with all the tools we need. 3 MK Vs, 5 10ERs (3 waiting refurb), Powermatic table saw etc., etc.. She reads the WW magazines just like me. When I see a new thing/tool that might be nice and show it to her she usually agrees but not always so we either buy it or not. She does the same thing. No shoes, no purses and she buys clothes off the bargain rack in the BX.

Get the SS, she will forgive you eventually. Especially if she wants something. I am still trying to figure out what my hubby wants. He got me the PP DIY upgrade, double tilt upgrade, lift assist and a DeWalt 735 planer last year. He also made a special trip with me to pick up the band saw and jointer from Tom today. :D

ERLover, I worry about you if you are looking at purses, unless they were for your mom. The only purse I have ever owned was issued to me in boot camp. I never carried it but had to keep it to for the sea-bag inspections.

Get the machine!!! You may not find another deal like that for a good while...

Hold onto the entire SS and give it some time.
