I was wondering if you could use the older brass auto track bearing with the newer type guide roller bearings? I got the upgrade kit and one of the black bolts sheared in half while I was tightening it. (Shopsmith is sending a replacement ) I'm also not a huge fan of trying to get the blade to ride in the 'grove' between the newer type. (Could be I got botched wheels/tires in the upgrade kit, which Shopsmith is also replacing)
Thanks!

Getting the blade to ride in the groove is just part of the alignment procedures and should happen without a lot of difficulty. If this is not your case, I suspect that there is something else that needs your attention.
The band saw is relatively easy to maintain but it needs to be properly aligned first. Once aligned, very little ever needs to be done to keep it that way. I strongly suggest that you plan to spend a Saturday morning with the band saw and go through the process of "total alignment" as detailed in the operators manual.
Thanks for the reply. I had the Bandsaw aligned just fine with my old set of wheels and roller bearings before the upgrade kit. Granted I had worn tires..
The alignment issues only popped up (or became more apparent) when I put on the new tires/wheels and attempted to align everything to the new parts. I was unsuccessful in keeping the blade from popping out of the groove after several rotations of the tires. I suspect that the tires/wheels I received with the upgrade kit are the main issue for not getting a good alignment. For instance, the tire on the lower wheel was put on with quite a 'skew' and moves from the back of the tire to the front and the top wheel is 'lumpy' from how the adhesive was applied. Anyhow, Shopsmith is sending out replacements...
I was just curious if the older brass roller could be with the new type or if its either all brass type or all the new type.
Thanks

I can not comment on the older brass rollers because I have no experience with them.
As for the blade no longer riding in the groove after installing new tires - this makes me sispect that the diameter of the band saw wheeels is not different than before. If this is the case, new alignment should resolve that.
I would ask - how far out of the groove does the blade want to ride???

I used a 1/2" blade when aligning. I tensioned it according to the scale and spun it several times to make sure that it was set on the wheels and moved smoothly. I aligned the back up bearing and the upper and lower bearing so that the blade was in the middle of each. Spun the blade a few times again and the blade popped out of the groove. Realigned bearing to new blade position and spun again. Few rotations later it popped out again. Seems to be moving back and forth about 3mm or so on the back up bearing but not on the others. Realigned the back up bearing and thought maybe I didn't have enough tension on the blade (it's not a Shopsmith Brand) and as I was tensioning I noticed that the blade would move as I tensioned.. didn't think it should do that.
After failing to keep it in the groove I returned to using the brass backup bearing since it doesn't have the groove (and I needed to bolt to replace one that snapped while tightening the lower roller )
I've run the saw with the mixed old and new rollers. Seems to run and cut okay but I can't see what the blade is doing since I sure as hell am not gonna run it without the cover on.
Once I get the replacement tires I'll redo the alignment completely and replace the brass with the groove back up bearing and see if it stays put.

Just a thought: If the band saw wheels, with their new tires, are not perfectly round - you would experience some lateral movement of the blade.
That's one of the things I'm suspecting. The new tires are supposed to be inspected by the lead engineer before being sent to me. So, hopefully the new set is perfect. We'll see.

Do I understand correctly that you have new wheels"(with lumpy tires) from SS?
Lumpy tires could create blade movement, but that should be apparent at both guide bearings.
The blades want to have a circular shape. Adding tension will pull them into a more linear shape between the wheels. So yes the blade will move as tension is changed.
If the tires are not tensioned consistently around the circumference the effective diameter will vary.

Yes. These tires are brand new. The tire on the wheel was glued on at a skew and the upper wheel has lumps in the adhesive. I got them with the bandsaw upgrade package. Needless to say, I was disappointed with the quality of them. Shopsmith is sending out replacements... I just haven't received them yet. Hopefully, the replacments are better.

Just for clarification, you have the old style back tires and they are the new ones of which you speak? They came from shopsmith and you installed them?
There is a trick to putting on the tires and if you did the job it is quite possible the tires were fine but the install needs some improvement. You simply can't slip them on and they work....... much more involved then that.
The new orange tires I have no experience with but my guess is they too need to be done in a particular way to insure they are round and true.
I have no experience with the old bearing but the replacement ones I have on have no issue with staying in the groove. My guess is once the tire issue is resolved this issue will go away.
