miter gauge glides

I needed some nylon guides for my miter gauge and found these on McMaster Carr.

I've got a bag of those too. Don't recall where they are but I have enough to live my life out and my sons and grandsons too. I've never found a new/another use for them and they don't come to mind often so I probably never will.

The worst part is that I mostly use the newer miters gauges that take the newer glides so the old ones don't get much wear.

Maybe we should start selling them on ebay for $7 each..... make retirement a little easier.

What McMasters Part Number did you find works. What I can find in the McMasters Catalog do not fit the description.

Click on the link and the screws are the 5/16-18 in the right hand column at the top. They have a hex socket for the SS allen wrench,

Thanks for the quick reply. I am going to order some. I don't need them right now but ....I really dislike waiting for parts when the wait could have been avoided.

I trust now that you have used these and find them suitable as they are quite different than the Shopsmith gliders.

Just remember that there are at least two styles of these. The one on the left is the newer one the one on the right the older. The replacements are for the one on the right.

When shopsmith did the 510 table with the ribs they had to change these so if you have a 510 or newer hardware you will likely have the new design.

Mine are like the ones on the right but I do have the 510/520 table and the glides seem to work OK. When I upgraded to the 510 I did not get a new miter gauge only the bar.

That is the same thing that happened to me. The problem will show up when you have the miter gauge set at an angle. The smaller glides will come in at an angle and you will feel it if you are thinking about it....... Might seem like nothing but they did the redesign I'm guessing because of complaints.

I didn't like the all ribbed main table either. That is what I had on the 510 so after the upgrade to a 520 I was still stuck with the old table. Later I updated that table as well and I'm much happier.

BTW remember the 500 had a flat table so the design evolved but it seemed to have gotten lost somewhere along the way with the upgrades. I think the bar was a start but the protractor head should have also been included with the 500 to 510/520 kit.

Here is a thought.
you can buy a flexible cutting board.
Cut the flexible cutting board about two or three inches in length and the width of the miter gauge.
first remove the bar from the miter gauge, drill a hole the pivot screw for the miter gauge. Place the flexible cutting board between the bar and the miter gauge and put the screw back in. Trim the flexible cutting board to fit and so the miter gauge can be set at different angles.
That way you have a plastic sheet the full width of the miter gauge instead of just the two plastic screws. You might be able to glue the flexible cutting board to the bottom of the miter gauge, so that it stays in place.
