Changing drum sander sleeve

Belt dressing??????

Talcum powder.

TP reduces friction to ease getting the sleeve on/off.

Belt conditioner hopefully softens the rubber thus allowing it to change shape (shrink) more easily.

Might be wishful thinking.

I've had the other problem on one I got off ebay. It was as hard as a rock and the sanding sleeves would/could not be made tight enough or have enough grip to hold. Try sanding when the drum turns in the sand paper.... I contacted the seller and we tried a few things like belt conditioner and a few car products but in the end I returned that one and he replaced it plus gave me some "free" sandpaper drums for my efforts and understanding.

Like the sanding disks I keep a set of these with different grits mounted. Yea that might sound crazy but I've found that both of these extra parts have come in handy and would recommend this to others.

This is also why when I wear out a sleeve I don't worry about how it comes off cause it is trash at that point anyway.

Nothing crazy about having extra everything! I do the same and you never know when your going to need it...

There is a simple solution assuming you have a serviceable drum sanding mandrels to start with. DO NOT store the mandrel with the drum nut tightened. I always loosen the nut when I am done using using it. I have a dedicated wrench at the drum sander storage location. It takes 5 seconds to loosen the nut. I have never had a stuck sanding sleeve.

Agree with Mr. Burger about releasing the tension. Of course if you buy a used one there's no telling how it has been kept.

Yes, this one was purchased used a couple years ago and I hadn't used it yet. It is probably a good 30 years old. Will know how to store for the future though!

How do I find the part number for the rubber for the drum sander? I can't find it on-line.

I just ordered the whole assembly. I did finally get the sanding sleeve mounted tonight. The 2x4 rolling actually got the rubber sleeve off the two part metal drum. I then mounted the sanding sleeve on the rubber and eventually got the rubber sleeve on the drum. Belt dressing didn't help because it increases friction. Silicone spray was questionable in its effects. A screwdriver to help work the lip over the edge helped, but I never want to have to do that again. Might try sanding it down when my replacement arrives. I was able to use it tonight as a thickness sander on the inlay pieces I am making and it worked beautifully.

Guys, once hardening takes effect, (old age,Arizona weather, whatever) just bite the bullet,
and get another one. (Or 3.) I got one a few years ago, and was less than 10 dollars (I think)
delivered from Mom. (The Mother=Ship.)

As I already mentioned, I did get a new one, but they are over thirty bucks a pop now.
