FYI New version of Sketchup is out
Just downloaded it and have yet to play with it or see what is new but wanted others to know that it is out there.

Re: FYI New version of Sketchup is out
I guess there may have been more updates between now when I posted this but I have just updated again.
The odd thing that happened was that I had to become admin to do the upgrade. It kept failing and after several attempts I recalled having had read about a similar situation and that becoming admin to do the install fixed it.
So that is what I did and it worked.
Now I'm on windows10 and on the fast track so I'm running a different build then a lot of you so I don't know if this is related to that or to windows10 or just to my machine.
I figured that some others might find this issue or not and at least if you do you will want to look up how to become admin on your version to do the update.
I have since updated (last night) to a newer yet version of windows10 so maybe that issue is gone or maybe not but I can't test it to see.
A heads up for those that might need it.

Re: FYI New version of Sketchup is out
Hi Ed,
The new owners of Trimble have added something in the Registry. I think it was because someone found a way to convert the Pro version from 30 day free trial to a full version.
Once I found ALL the instances of it and erased them, I could load the Make updated version with no problem.
I've given up on the W10 beta updates (and the W10 for phones also). Too many problems with windows program files being lost (or possibly corrupted) when new ones are supposed to be taking their place, so I cannot access data files, I gave up on the windows version because the app creation process is far more time consuming than for Android or Apple OS. And I am changing my phone from windows to Android.
back to being just a "give me an update wind they feel like it" user.
Be well,
Ben

Re: FYI New version of Sketchup is out
I've been really happy with windows10 and have been running it since beta and have done all the updates. Over all of these I have yet to find a problem with any of my programs having problems. I've only had the blue screen of death once, that is less then I did with previous versions of windows and they were all stable versions.
This last case was the first time I've had an update have problems so I though I would mention it here. The solution was to run as administrator but that might have been an issue in the windows updated software I was running and it may be gone now.
Perhaps as you say the sketchup people were attempting to block some tweaks that people were doing to get away with things, that was not listed in the update description but then it wouldn't be. It is also possible they were attempting to modify files that have only administrative privileges.
I have a second system that I will attempt the update on at some point and if I find anything else out I'll post here. That other system also runs the same windows10 versions but has other hardware. I don't use it much for sketch up but I do have a copy on there and will see if it will upgrade or not. If it does then it may have been an issue with the version of windows10 or not.

Re: FYI New version of Sketchup is out
I updated Sketchup as soon as I became aware that it was available. I am not sure that I like some of the changes. The issue that I have been having is that tool selection does not always work. There are times when I have to select the tool I want to use two or three times before it occurs.
I have the most problem with the drawing tools.
I am running version 16.0.19911-32 bit with Windows 7 Home Premium.
I have attempted Windows 10 update no less than a half dozen times and have always been forced back to Windows 7. I have given up on that until I decide to buy a new machine (which is unlikely unless this computer gives up the ghost and I cannot revive it).
I do keep a good set of backups though just in case.

Re: FYI New version of Sketchup is out
I did the update a few days ago and it is 16.1.1449 but the 64bit version so I don't know if the numbers are the same for the 32 bit.
I too have noticed that I will pick tool only to have to pick it a second time. Some times I go to select something and I end up starting to draw a line or circle because the pick didn't take and that if frustrating.
Since it is possible there is a new update you might get to see how it works for updating and for actual use.
I did the update but then did the windows update yesterday rather then using the new sketch up. I will be doing a new cabinet design to fit under my shopsmith old style OPR so we will see what if anything shows up with this version.

Re: FYI New version of Sketchup is out
I just thought my Sketchup was up to date. I now have version 16.1.1450 32-Bit.
It is probably too early to say for certain but it looks as thought at least some of my complaints have been fixed; if now by software change then maybe by doing a new load.
Tool selection, which has been an irritant to me for some time, now seems to work like charm. Let's hope this is not "snap judgement".

Re: FYI New version of Sketchup is out
I also learned of a trick that has probably been there forever.
I work in fractions most of the time and whenever I wanted to see dimensions in decimal I had to select Model Info to have that option available to me. I accidentally learned today (just now) that I can select Model Info and then drag it to the second monitor and it is there in real-time.

That is interesting. I live in a one monitor world since I don't have room for a second monitor on my work table. Well I do but there is a monitor I share with two other PC's by way of a switch box. The other monitor is really old, one of the first viewsonic flat panels and very limited resolution. I want to ditch it but the PC's are old too and their video cards limit what I can attach monitor wise. When I upgrade my main system later this year I think I will retire both of those machines and get a new monitor that will allow me to use two monitors and share that monitor with this system and the new system. I'd like to go to higher resolution which this PC can already do but for the monitor so I guess I really need to upgrade both monitors.........
Anyway nice find!

Hey Ed, if you have multiple machines at the same workstation, you should check out Mouse Without Borders. It lets you control up to four machines with the same mouse and keyboard, and also do simple drag-and-drop file transfers between them. No switchbox required. I use it with my main Win7 desktop, an old XP machine I still use for video editing, and also my Win7 laptop as needed. It makes the three machines feel like one extended desktop.reible wrote:dusty wrote:I also learned of a trick that has probably been there forever.
