Arts & Crafts-style Bench

Post by TomH »

Can't help myself, I have to show this one off! This is the first piece of furniture other than shelves or quilt racks that I've done and it came out great! You can actually sit on it without it breaking or exploding. True, I did use biscuits as opposed to mortise and tenon but you can't tell can you? :D

Got the plan from Wood magazine web site. The plan gives details for both biscuit and M&T construction. My wife helped me make the cushioned seat. Regular old stain and poly for a finish.

I also cheaped out and used regular Menard's red oak (it was on sale) as I wasn't sure how it would turn out and hated to waste real quarter-sawn white oak! Maybe the next one! ;)

(Crappy cell phone photos too!)

those are beautiful! Did you design yourself or get plans? If you designed yourself and would share, I'd love the plans for those!

Some of both, I bought the plans, but made some design Mods to them and size changes, I think I made them slightly smaller as far as there foot print.

Looks awesome, Tom. White oak next time for sure--your work is plenty good to showcase it!
