Some talk here about splines on quills, the quill on the left is from a Gilmer Driven quill, fewer splines, the one on the right is a single bearing quill from a poly V belt drive, more splines, if you want to convert a SS with Gilmer drive you must change the Drive Sleeve Assembly, Idler Shaft and Quill. A friend of mine did this om his 1954 Mark 5.

Your Gilmer drive quill can be re-machined and fitted with a second bearing by Skip Campbell. MKCtools
