Dado arbor too long in my 510?

Post by EYoung »

I bought a used 510 a while ago which came with a dado arbor. I made my first dados last night with it and had a hard time with the alignment. Is it normal for the 510 table to bump in to the dado arbor? I got around it by moving the table a bit but that isn't very repeatable so I was wondering if this is normal.

Well a couple of things here.

I believe there are, well were two different length dado arbors, the newer one is shorter I believe. There are posts here about this. For sure your arbor interferes more then mine does. But mine still interferes but by maybe a 1/16" or so.

The next thing to look at is the length of the "rubber baby bumper" post for some enlightenment on the various lengths to see how yours compares. That is assuming you have one.

How you use the spacers on the stack up also matters. It doesn't help with the interference but with the location of the blade in relationship to the opening.

Here are a couple of pictures of mine:

Mine just barely clears the Table Bar but right now I have a Carriage Stop Ring that is longer than some others. This causes the Carriage to be located further to the right and provides some additional clearance. Still, even though I can raise and lower the table without interference, the blade is too far right in the table cutout. I would move the Carriage as far as necessary to place the dado blade in the approximate center of the cutout.

Over the years there have been different versions of that arbor. The length does vary.

I have not had significant interference issues with my Mark 5.

Sooo today I measured.

For reference I established the 'blade center' to be the common front/rear centerline of the insert mounting screws.

The Mark 5 trunion is approximately 1 5/8" from that line.

The 510 trunion is approximately 1 3/8" from that line.

A difference of about 1/4"!

Wow no wonder the concern and maybe an explanation of why the arbor is now shorter.

I noticed Ed's had one spacer less than the initial post and less thread protrusion from the nut.

Thank you for the great input so far. I do have a "rubber baby bumper". I used to have a 500 and still have some of the arbors and I can tell you from those that the "rubber baby bumper" is larger than it was on my 500 (i.e. the old arbors are too short for my 510).

I'm not at home but when I get there I'll check on my distance. I have an older dado arbor (more rusty anyway) so maybe I'll try that out too though I fear it's from my 500 and therefore the section that connects to the headstock will be too short.

So far it will work for me but I may invest in another dado arbor to try to fix the problem. I'm particularly concerned because I'm using a Menards 8" dado blade and I want to make sure I don't risk any clearance issues.

One other question: Should I be able to use the lower saw guard with the dado set? That seems to be another part that was problematic last night (though for the life of me I don't remember why). I was only doing a 3/8" dado so no problem so far but I imagine I'll get bigger eventually.

Did you open the lower guard fully?

The saw blade arbors are the only ones that are relevant to the 'spacer'.

All other arbors(not standard flat saw blade) are variable.

The point of interference shown in the image provided is not effected by the lower saw guard. That is the Table Bar that the arbor collides with. The Table Bar is not part of the lower saw guard.

What do you mean when you say "All other arbors are variable"? How are my shaper or molder arbors variable? Yes, there are spacers but they do not effect over all length..

He asked about the lower guard also(later post).

The length of the end of the arbor that attaches to the quill shaft varies with the actual arbor adapter. I was not referring to the threaded end nor the overall length. Also 'circa' varies.
