Why?
Simply because it is.
Yes a SS can function quite well as a table saw for cutting large sheet goods, but all that cast iron and steel at a lower elevation just plain makes it easier.

We all need to remember your reasoning when someone criticizes the Shopsmith's sawing capabilities. I know there are more than a few on this forum that would be up in arms if I had stated what you said. Interesting!JPG wrote:EIT!

I understand that. I did not intend to criticize the SS saw function, but merely to state that other tools can be better.Ed in Tampa wrote:We all need to remember your reasoning when someone criticizes the Shopsmith's sawing capabilities. As always, the skill of the operator is what is most important.
i.e. keep emotion out of the picture.

Like all specific tools great, and yes you can do somethings with others to do the same thing, example I have a book on joinery, he explanes how do a joint in it with many types of tooling, BUT there is the main one just for that job.
So to do sheet goods there are better things then a SS table saw, you just have to make it work fairly safely. Or what I do is break it down on horses with a Saber Saw, ruff dimensions and and keep a factory square edge to square it up.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.
