Wanted a drill press for fathers day . . .

I'm blown away by how helpful all of you were. Since my wife had already set up a time to go see it, I drove over this morning. Armed with all of your advice and competing adds, I suggested that I'd be eager to buy it at $150, expecting him to bargain me up to $250.

Turns out he inherited it from an uncle and doesn't do any wood working, so he accepted my offer on the spot.

So, now it's downstairs and I get to spend fathers day figuring ti all out!

And make sure you oil it properly. My first steps with a new unit is oil, graphite, clean with mineral spirits, rust removal, and wax it up. Happy Father's day and enjoy.

And make sure you oil it properly. My first steps with a new unit is oil, graphite, clean with mineral spirits, rust removal, and wax it up. Happy Father's day and enjoy.

Beave I do it just the opposite, I dont want the MS and rust removal to get rid of the oil and graphite, even though most of that is internal.

Dont force anything!!!! Many things on a SS have a dual action, and they resist normal logic/thinking. Like the Head Stock and Carriage lock. The table raising lock works the same way. You turn counter clock wise to loosen, but that is not enough, you have to turn a bit more to release the locking devise.

Before using it as a drill press, decide how you are going to protect the table top. A small piece of plywood will suffice. You do not want to drill into the table top(a common problem with most drill presses).

Still need to watch depth of quill feed.

P. S. There will be times you will mount the rip fence when using it as a drill press, so more than one size top protector may be required.

Also adding cleats to straddle the table is a good idea.

Adding a piece of 3/4" piece of wood to the fence that is split to give the chuck clearance when using the fence close to an edge of wood being drilled, no pic available at this time for it.
