Older Pro Fence Upgrade - Item#555781 - Please Advise?

I am looking at buying what appears to be an older 510 to 520 Pro Fence upgrade. The item# appears to be 555781 which appears to map to the 555983 current inventory number. This applies to the pre-1986 Mark V machines which is fine for my 1984 unit.

Question: Does this item 555781 include the Pro-Scale direct reading measuring tapes as found in the new item number? I need to know quick before I am obligated to purchase and DO NOT want to have to spend another $160 to upgrade the measurement tape feature.

Quick validation is much appreciated!

The key question is - Are you getting the Pro Rip Fence with your initial purchase. If you get the rip fence, to make it complete do you need anything other than the scales.

It is really difficult to answer your question because everything depends on exactly what you might be purchasing and only the person selling it can tell you for sure.

What I can tell you is I really like the Pro Fence. It is worth everything it cost me.

Shopsmith introduced the 510 in 1985 and the 520 (with the Pro Fence) in 1999. The item you are thinking about buying could not possibly be a 1986 Pro Fence. Additionally, we would need to know a little more about your machine to be able to advise you. Has your 1984 Mark V already been upgraded to a 510? Do you have the 510 sawguards, saw arbor, sanding disc hub, miter gauge, table, carriage, extension table, and floating tables? The kit to which you refer will do you little good unless you do.

Additionally, the scale feature was something Shopsmith added later to the 520. Earlier 520s didn't have the them, nor is there anyway you can add the necessary magnets to the older 520 rails -- you need the newer ones. You should check with the seller to see if the rail extrusions have ledges with magnets attached. If not, you won't be able to add this feature later without buying a whole new kit.

I have the 1984 Mark V with the full 510 upgrade kit that includes everything with all tables, extensions, accessories, etc. I am bidding on the kit on ebay and cannot tell if there are any ledges on the kit with magnets. The seller is a consignor and does not know much about what they are selling. I confirmed the item number maps to the correct fence I need since it is prior to 1986. It appears the only thing I need to verify now is if this has the rip scales.

Or maybe item number 555781 will reveal that this was a pre-rip scale upgrade kit and that would be a quick answer to the question.

To win the ebay bid right now, you have to spend $375.00 (including shipping) and you might not have the magnetic strips and the rip scale.

If you purchase the upgrade kit now, while it is on sale, you get the whole enchilada for $374.70 (plus s/h and taxes).

To answer your question - no you cannot tell from the ebay ad whether or not there are magnets and the photos do NOT show the rip scales.

Contact Shopsmith Customer Service (1-800-543-7586) would be my recommendation.

It is close and was hoping to save a few bucks..the total will be $416 from shopsmith...just need to confirm if the ebay unit has the mag strips or not.

The only way to confirm it, is from ebay. I'd go with the known and buy it from SS. They WILL stand behind it, will the ebay seller?

There is another risk you may not be aware of, Dave. The rails in the initial 510s and 510 upgrade kits were attached with torque screws. If you have one of these, you need the #555982 kit. If you have the newer 510 upgrade in which the rails were attached with regular bolts, you need the #555983. Not only is there no way for me to tell if this kit includes mag scales (because of the way in which the parts are stacked), there is also no way to tell whether it is a 555982 or 555983.

Grin and bear it, Dave, you may just have to work with us on this thing. That's a terrible burden, I know, but call Customer Service, ask for Linda, tell her I wrote you about the 982/983 consideration, and she'll make sure you get what you need. A few bucks more for a lot less hassle. Plus, if you buy from us, you get a free DVD of yours truly babbling about how to install upgrade kits.

Thanks for the advice. I found out that kit did not include the mag strips so was able to get out of my obligation to purchase by contacting the seller and explaining the situation.

Are there any upcoming sales on the upgrade kits? If so, I could wait if you know when that would happen.

I have a 1984 and 1954 'greenie' and just got into the Shopsmith way of life. I'm doing a complete tear down restoration of the 1954 and it has been very enjoyable.

Thanks again...I look forward to many years of fun with my Shopsmiths!
