New user from Poland

Hello guys!

I`m new user of SS (Mark V, mod: 500) from Poland (in here nobody heard about SS, I got mine from England) Few days ago I`ve ordered bandsaw and biscuit joiner - maybe today I`ll get it from UPS.

I`m glad to find this forum - so much info in one place!
Sorry for my english
1st question: can I change speed when motor is powered on or I could do that only when it`s power off ?

Hi Pepis, and welcome to the forum!

That is an excellent first question. The answer is do NOT turn the speed-control dial unless the spindle is turning. Turning/forcing the dial with the spindle/motor stopped can damage the headstock. Normally the headstock will be powered up when changing speed settings. But if necessary, you can turn the spindle by hand (mounting a sanding disc or lathe faceplate for leverage) and slowly turn the speed control.

And another question to be sure - before I turn off to change accesory I need to turn speed when it`s runnig to "slow", change accesory and power on and turn up speed to avoid starting motor with fast speed?

It's always a good idea to turn the speed to slow before changing accessories. Otherwise, if you switch to a low-speed device such as a bandsaw or sanding disc, it may be running much too fast when you power on.

You may also see instructions to ALWAYS turn the speed to slow before powering off. But that's generally only necessary if you have an inadequate electrical supply .. e.g. a 15A branch circuit that already has a lot of load on it. The concern is that at high speeds, the motor's starting inrush current last longer, and so is more likely to pop a circuit breaker. Few if any of us on the forum turn the speed down every time we power off -- we're more likely to install a dedicated 20A circuit if we need to.

Europe runs on 230 V 50 Hz, insufficient power shouldn't be a problem for him.
