computers are a real #$@*%&!#

Post by wa2crk »

Was on the internet this AM . Shut down the browser and went into the garage to work. Came back at noon and checked in on the net again and all was OK. Came back this afternoon and clicked on Firefox and got "Check in as Brooklyn Guest" message. Didn't know what that was so I dismissed it and clicked Firefox and got "can't access network". Tried my neighbor's wifi and got "can't access network". Reset the modem and got the same message. Tried the wife's computer and it worked OK. Reset the modems a second time and got the same message. Finally used "system restore" and computer is now OK. I think. I am still muttering $#@&%*!!.
End of rant

An old saying: "To err is human. To REALLY screw up requires a computer!"

And now, we are collectively at the mercy of a generation of programmers too young to know, or even appreciate, that old saying. :(

What level windows? Do you use window defender?

Seriously if all you are doing is web surfing get an iPad. Since nothing is written on the machine a virus is all but impossible to get. Of course if you believe in the tooth fairy you may get hooked into getting a non apple certified app that could give you grief.

I have gotten the Apple system is locked message with the instructions to unlock call xxx-xxx-xxxx with your credit card and we will free it.

I then go into settings delete my browsing history, turn the iPad off and on and it is gone.

The history will keep taking you back to the message but no code was written on the iPad. Off on resets storage.

There are sick little minds out there and I don't doubt that some day they will figure out how to infect an iPad but for now the best they seem to have is empty threats.

Worst case since the iPad is automatically backup to iCloud and there is no programs only apps. If they figure how to really lock up an iPad you can just do a reset. Then go to App Store and get they apps you had for free. Easy peasey. Why mess with a computer.

Before the iPad I used my desktop 8-10 hours a day. Writing doc, doing spread sheets, doing graphics, tracking my finances, doing church finances, bulletins, and etc. since getting the iPad I retired the desktop, and only use the laptop when my wife has the iPad.

Also almost every magazine I read is now in IBooks, all books are in IBooks and I often watch movies and TV shows on the iPad. NFL channel is great on iPad as is NASCAR. And if the wife is not using the big screen in use airplay and watch on the large screen. If the big TV is in use I can AirPlay to one of e smaller ones or simply watch on the iPad itself. Great definition!

Oh yes I can print or scan to or from the iPad and since it had a camera I can actually scan on it. Any screen capture is simply two buttons. Have 32 gig of which I only use less than half and have everything on the cloud..

I gave up on the frustrations of Windows back in 1999. Every day using Windows was filled with frustrations. I decided that there must be something a lot better. I switched to Linux, and 17 years later am still using Linux and would never again consider using anything from Microsoft.

As a side note, I worked at the IT guy for a company that ran a Mac network. For me, the are just as bad as Windows.

For me, never again anything from Microsoft or Apple. They want to own you and control you. Linux doesn't try to do that.

Having a career working for IBM on both hardware and software and having used PC's since their inception I can understand your feelings. If half the fun is playing with the computer doing things your way, you are right both windows and Apple is not where it is at. However if you view the computer as only a data depository manipulation, and retrieval system Windows and Apple MacOS are it.
