"The devil is in the details" is one of my favorite expressions to use when managing product-design projects. But having just found the following, I'll be switching to "God is in the details." I might even have it inscribed on my tombstone.

The details were as you suspected - the final is blended from a 1965 Parts Manual, a 1966 and other Owners Manuals, even the Jan 73 last publication as I sought to get the best candidate photos from a variety of scanned manuals to get the best source to work from to retouch the copies of printed pictures I had to work from.

I so wish that Shopsmith Inc. today had access to the original archived photos so I might have worked with the best -the originals- that Magna American had made the OEM manuals from back in the mid 60's.

I suspect they were filed somewhere in Raymond Mississippi where Magna Publications who published "Modern Power Tool Woodworking" by R.J. De Cristoforo in 1967 which used the Mark VII extensively, or by the Art department of Fawcett Publications in New York in that time period.

Since they are half a century old, I doubt they exist in original form anywhere today, but it would have been nice to have had them to rewrite / re-illustrate the manual. R.J.'s forward in the book above was dated October 1966.

I am glad folks are finding it useful. I think we should latch onto every Mark VII we can salvage and preserve.

As requested by a number of folks, I created and added a document "My Method to the Shopsmith Alignment Process" to documents that may be downloaded in the first post in this thread.

It originated from discussions in another thread that you may find beneficial to review https://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/view ... 69#p210669 in which a number of us discussed my alignment process last year.

I must presume once you find a used Shopsmith in acceptable condition to you, you're going to acquire it, and will, following any maintenance and restoration issues you encounter, will actually use it.

Accordingly I offer it for your consideration. Based on my experience, it is one of the easiest methods to get yours in alignment, and quickly verify it remains so.

My preferred method uses a dial indicator, but if you don’t have one you can substitute a Miter Gauge Stop Rod (or an equivalent rod) inserted into the Miter Gauge.

The task is to visually verify the clearance remains the same to the sanding disc for the procedures I use to verify the Sanding Disk is running true on the arbor (at 90° there will be no variance as it rotates by hand) and once verified, that the table slots are then parallel to it.

If you use the rod method, start with the disc about 1/32” away from the stop rod just in case the sanding disc is bent or has another variance. It is not as accurate as the dial indicator, but it is functional.

I downloaded your document on buying a used Shopsmith, and I couldn't stop reading it. It is as JPG said when you posted it in 2015 "It should be above the current (stickeys)"

I would say he would know, since he authored the one at the top of the two
(stickeys) in the Maintenance and Repair forum himself, which would place yours above his.

I have been reading information form time to time from this forum for years and never felt the need to become a member until I wanted to say thanks to you.

And to JPG, and Mickeyd, your contributions in this forum are extremely wothry of those (stickey) posts.

Since the JPG post, that buying used document has helped a lot of folks I am sure because this post has been read over 10,000 times and the buying used document has bee downloaded over 3,400 times so far.

I started down the line looking at the documents you have created, or recreated like the large size drawings, the 10E and 10ER manuals, and the Mark VII manuals, and I am blown away by what you have contributed, that somehow through the last year or so, I totally missed.

Wow. Just wow! You have my vote for this post to be a stickey post, like JPG said.

Everett, have you considered publishing your beautiful restored documents on VintageMachinery.org? I suspect that many more people would find them there.

I tried to submit the 10E to VintageMachinery.org.

I originally submitted the 10E manual there just as I completed it.

I waited and waited for it to be approved and listed publicly. It did successfully upload with no errors.

It was never approved for publication there making me believe they only want copies of vintage OEM manuals, so I did not submit the 10ER or the Mark VII, and that's why I created my Google Drive in the first place.

Those types of files are far too large for Shopsmith Forum posting limits.

Do you personally know someone at VintageMachinery.org by chance?
