cutting a groove into a plywood edge

When the pieces aren't too big to handle, I use my dado blade and run the pieces along the rip fence. It takes just seconds to do.

If you wanted to make a fence with a hole in it large enough to get the bit and quill through ,,,you could use the shop smith in a horizontal boring position , using a router bit ,, the grove part should be rather simple operation with the wood laying flat??

Just a thought.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the help.

My biggest problem is that I have not worked with plywood that much (as a woodworker) before. I have no Idea how it is going to react to various blades and processes. If I was working with real wood I would most likely use a dado, as I have had great results with that method.

So, I will probably try the dado blade and try this. You guys have given me a plethora of techniques to try, because I am assuming that ply will work pretty much the same. i am aware of the tearout properties, and I will try to minimize that problem, but all of the plywood cuts are going to be hidden ... so there is that ...

In what I seem to remember as Norm's last season he had some guys showing how they put on face frames using biscuits. The cleaver part was how they did them, you cut a shot for one side and then use the biscuit cutter for the other side.

Turns out this method works really well. I use this technique for all sort of projects. Here is an application I did one not too long ago, not quite the same but you can see how it works as the principal is the same:

Then of course you need a biscuit cutter. You should more then likely have one in your shop unless you have gone to Festool Domino's.

My father in law was good with plywood , never seen him splinter a piece and he used a lot of it, this is a cabinet he made , all of his out side corners were 45 deg , top and bottoms as well as sides. he used metal tracks in side for shelves , they were adjustable .

Just a idea to toss out there .

One thing you may want to consider is buying a Lamello or biscuit cutter. They will give you a lot more flexibility in your joinery and once you learn the layout techniques very fast. They will give you joints much stronger than the wood or plywood. Once you get the concept down you will find all kinds of uses for them. HF sells them pretty cheap.
