Replacement "B" Style headstock - Quill Issue

Post by fixit »

I recently bought a replacement headstock and after cleaning it up got ready to install the quill from my old machine.
The quill will not feed easily - in fact it binds to the point of having to use the quill retraction handle to move it in the opening.
There are no burrs on the quill and the surfaces of the openings and the quill itself are clean and newly waxed. The quill still binds.

I'm thinking now that either the openings must not be circular (as in oval shaped) OR the quill feed hardware is incorrectly installed.
The attached picture shows how the part I suspect is installed. I think it may be in the wrong location or facing the wrong way or both.

If anyone can help me solve this mystery I'd much appreciate it. the exploded parts diagram confirms I have the washer located in the correct order on the shaft but I can not determine the correct location in relation to the pinion gear and quill opening.

TIA for any help. I plan to call Shopsmith but can't do that until late tomorrow afternoon.

Take a look at the headstock exploded parts view I re-worked some time ago.

It will assist in getting the parts in the mix visually in your mind.

The PDF is zoom capable.

Check the setscrew at the top of the quill in the headstock. Adjusted correctly you extend the quill, tensioning the spring, and while you hold the quill advance handle securely, gently loosen the setscrew allowing the quill to gently slide back into the headstock under spring tension.

It should be just snug enough, but not bind. Replace the putty in the top of the hole to keep it from backing out once you have it right.

Quill stop ear broken? I suspect the bore is also reduced at that point.

Thanks everettdavis, Dansmith and JPG.

I used all your suggestions given and still ended up calling SS this afternoon.

They think they will have to send me a new Quill since the old quill was working fine when I removed it to do the DIY upgrade - and the new one binds.

Should get a call from them tomorrow - the decision maker was not available this afternoon.

Will post with their answer - but knowing how SS is about customer service I fully expect to have a new quill on the way to me shortly.

For JPG: The quill stop is not broken (thankfully) but the photo makes it appear so. The off line appearance is an optical illusion caused by the angle from which the pic was taken.

If you slide the quill and advance mechanism back into the original headstock they came out of, if they don't bind there, and do in your replacement headstock, I am suspecting the 2nd headstock.

If it does bind now in the headstock it came out of, something changed in the way the quill or quill advance is assembled, oriented now compared to before it was removed.

What does the quill itself feel like when slid in the newer headstock without the quill advance in it? I have seen some folks do a really bad job of keeping paint out of the inside when they repainted a headstock for sale on eBay causing some binding til cleared.

Is the setscrew that holds the quill return spring housing too tight? Sitting in the same orientation?

Just some random thoughts.... if we could see it and touch it ourselves it might be something one of us has seen or could find having done a good number of them in the past.

Do let us know and post pictures if you can isolate it.

I was not able to determine the cause but after some minor sanding with 1200 grit wet/dry sandpaper I did get the quill to slide fully into the headstock. There was no paint in the bore but there was quite a bit of corrosion.
It is "functional" in that it can be advanced fully and the return spring will retract the quill into the non-extended position.
However, there is still some binding which I can feel if I advance the quill slowly as one would do if using the drill press setup.

Shopsmith called me around noon yesterday (28 March) and asked me to send the entire headstock to them (they will pay shipping). They are sending me the proper packing materials and mailing labels. So the mother ship will have my headstock for a while and said they will fix the problem; make it work as it's supposed to; and ship it back to me. I can't ask for better service than that.

When I find out what the problem is and how it was fixed I will post that information here. It may be a while... Gail said it would be a couple days before she had everything ready to send me the packing materials, labels, instructions, etc. With shipping time and time for diagnosing and fixing the problem I won't be surprised if it takes two or three weeks (hopefully not longer) to resolve the issue. But I have another SS Power Pro so I won't be slowed down much in any projects I work on.

Sorry for the long winded post. There's more but will put that in another post.

UPDATE: Re: Replacement "B" Style headstock - Quill Issue

Post by fixit »

Shipped the headstock to ShopSmith via FedEx Ground on 11 April.
It should have arrived there on Friday the 15th.

The packing material SS sent along with a few pages of specific instructions made it easy to pack the headstock for safe shipment.

I'm anxious to hear both what causes the quill to stick and what the solution turns out to be.

Meanwhile, I'm getting rust off of the way/bench tubes from my father's machine and polishing them so everything is ready for reassembly when I get my headstock back.
Will post again when I have more specific information.

FINAL UPDATE: Re: Replacement "B" Style headstock - Quill Issue

Post by fixit »

Today I received a call from Shopsmith letting me know my headstock was being shipped back to me.
:D :D :D
Turns out the quill I received with my Power Pro DIY upgrade was part of the problem.
The upgrade quill I received was right at the high end of the diameter tolerance limit set for the manufacturer.
When Shopsmith swapped the quill for one that was closer to the mid-range of the tolerance limits it worked as designed.

It appears my Dad's SS may have a quill bore somewhere in the mid to low range diameter tolerance limit. So the upgrade quill with a diameter at the high end of the diameter tolerance limit was just slightly too tight a fit.
Hopefully my explanation of the problem and fix is understandable. If not please let me know - I'll be happy to discuss it further if anyone needs/wants clarification.

Shopsmith, in keeping with their fantastic customer service reputation, fixed the problem and my headstock is scheduled to arrive at my house by FedEx on Monday, 24 April!

My thanks to Gail in Customer Service, Sue Powell the Service Technician, and Jim McCann, the Shopsmith Engineer for their speedy response in fixing my problem.

Now I'm back to renovating my Dad's machine. I'm sure he's watching all this with a smile on his face.

P.S. My thanks to all who contributed suggestions and advice on this issue. Once again you proved what a great group of folks inhabit this forum.
