Behold! The De-rustification powers of Evaporust and NJ!

Hey All,

Since I've been refurbishing a neglected shopsmith, I've been doing quite a bit of rust removal on various surfaces.

I have come to greatly appreciate Evaporust given its non-caustic removal of rust via chelation chemistry and also Naval Jelly which gives a nice thick coat of phosphoric acid that generally stays put where you put it.

The evaporust is great if you can bathe the material in it to allow it to perform its miracle rust removal action.

Naval Jelly works really well on a flat surface or anything you can wrap some saran wrap around or a paper towel coated in a thick layer of naval jelly.

Anyways, good stuff! Here are some before and after pics.

Way tube before evaporust and after evaporust! I like how it works well in even diving deep into pitted metal to chelate all of the iron oxide. Great on fastening hardware and bolts. I just got a long 2" piece of PVC tubing and dropped it in there for a nice soak.





Used some naval jelly on this very rusted steel plate that is part of a shopsmith belt sander. Just one coat cleaned it up quite a bit!





I have also used electrolysis, wire brushes and good ole' manual scrubbing but I feel like the wire brush works well but kicks up a lot of dust.

Great stuff. I have used it before. A good thing about it is the solution can be reused several times. It also doesn't bother most paints if they have a good grip!

True, evaporust is really great stuff. With kids, I am always a bit worried with using anything caustic like strong bases/lyes, acids and electrolysis techniques. Those little scamps can get into anything if they put their minds into it.

At least with evaporust, they can get some on their skin, eyes and mouth and still largely be unharmed. Drinking a bit of it wouldn't be great, but better than downing some phosphoric/hydrochloric acid or strong lye solution.

It seems to be able to absorb a significant amount of rust as well! I definitely have gotten more than my money's worth out of the gallon solution I bought especially by avoiding buying new fastening hardware.

It is gentle on paints. Unfortunately, it does strip all oxide finishes so just be wary of that.
