Lets talk Pro Planer. I need help!

So I made the drive today to retrieve my pro planer that has been on loan for about 5 years. It looked like it had been stored in a coal mine. At least all the black gook was protecting the white splatter paint job someone did on it. I don't blame the person that I loaned it to he has been incapacitated for a long while but never loan tools that are stored in a shared garage. Better yet just never loan tools.


After cleaning it up as good as I could I I tried to use it to plane some 4" wide maple boards. It made a he$$ of a racket and bogged down in the slowest setting. I had checked the knives and they look to be in good shape and were just installed before loaning it out. I pulled the belt guard off and the upper pulley had been installed without a key in the keyway (not me!) so it is toast. I think the shaft is fine. I am also going to need to replace the outfeed roller. I see that Shopsmith still has the upgraded pulley set and it says the pulleys are steel. I ordered a set back when I got the planer used several years ago. Those are the ones on it now and they are aluminum.

I need a manual for this thing an any pointers that you may have on replacing the roller. I also need a knife setting jig. I had one at one time but it is probably buried in the black obis.

This is the out feed roller. It looks pretty straight forward to replace.

It actually looks pretty good after the clean up. I can't help you with the out feed roller. I have never replaced mine. Last I checked the blade setting jig was listed as available from SS. I sent you a PM.

Clean the bed and wax it with Johnson's Paste Wax twice.

I am sure you've likely done that, but just in case.

Doesn't look bad. Wax table and maybe you need in feed or out feed rollers but they don't look real bad. Never had that problem. Have had pulley come off the top shaft due to vibration or bent pulley maybe.

Polish the table and wax well. The SS planer does not have rollers on the table so reducing the drag is the key. I would do that before replacing the rollers. It's one of those double edged swords. The solid table on the SS reduces snipe to a bare minimum but because of the lack of rollers one is required to do a lot more waxing/polishing. Worth the trouble though.

Okay I picked up a key today and reinstalled the pulley just to be able to run it to make sure the motor wasn't the problem. It doesn't make the noise and does not bog down as it did before. The pulley is warped so I will replace it but I'm trying to get everything I need in one order so does anyone have experience with the following upgrade kit. I'm curious as to how it works and how well it works. According to Joy from the serial number mine is a 1983 vintage. It has a plastic semi clear dust shoot but it also shoots a lot out of the front of the machine. I'm guessing this was an early dust shoot upgrade?

My dust shoot has that piece installed. I have never used it without so I have nothing to compare it to. However, if by front you mean the operator/in feed side, mine shoots some chips out but I would not call it a lot or excessive.

I installed that retro attachment on my Pro Planer, and it made a BIG difference in chip collection efficiency.

I did, however, have to grind a bit off of the long edge, to keep it from rubbing on my outfeed roller.

No brainer - get it!

The chips are thrown up over the cutter and there is nothing to stop their free fall. Suction alone does not 'collect' them. The 'upgrade' provides a resting place for the chips prior to being sucked up into the hose.
