510 vs. 520

Post by nickoleyt »

What is the differance between a 510 and a 520. I found a 510 in good shape for $700.00 but dont want to sacrifice if the differnace is a lot.

The description of a 520 upgrade kit is probably the best way to learn the differences.

A good clean 510 for $700 is a good deal if it contains all of the standard 510 accessories.

There are a lot of real happy 510 users.

Thanks Dusty, it looks like fence and table size are the big difference. So the inca stuff might not fit the 510 right?

The 510 and 520 tables are one in the same. The major difference is the upgraded rip fence (and magnetic scales if you get them).

With regard to the Incra. Some Incra equipment will work with the Shopsmith 510 or 520. Hopefully an Incra user will chime in here and give specifics.

When I bought the Ultimate Fence Router System package, the Incra fence would fit both the 510 and 520. Currently Shopsmith lists separate part numbers for the 510 and 520. http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... tempkg.htm

About the Incra on the 510 and 520; I THINK that the only difference is the rails on the router table. And of course that will make a difference IF you also buy an additional floating table: SS offers pre drilled floating tables, to be used with the Incra set up, for both the 510 and the 520.:)

I'd buy the 510 and upgrade it to the 520.;)
$700 is a great price. IMHO

All the Incra tools SS sells will work on both the 510 and 520. Just make sure you specify which one you have when ordering the Incra stuff (510 or 520).

If you purchase the Incra Ultra system, SS sells a router table with the system that has the correct mounting tubes/hardware attached to it so it mounts on the 510 with no problems.

That is the system I have and it works great. I have had no problems, just woodworking enjoyment.:) :D

Also, if you are planning on using the Incra Fence/System, there is really no need to upgrade to the 520. The Incra fence will more than make up for anything the 520 can do.
