Here comes Irma

Just read a article on the hurricane Irma ,according to the article shelves at local stores are in Florida are running bare, said folks are stocking up on water and dry goods. If this thing keeps building like they are predicting it could be worse then Harvey. good luck to the people of Florida.

I was there in a semi delivering food when Katrina hit, I made it to Savanna before I was shut down . I never seen any thing like it , been through blizzards , avalanches , rock slides, mud slides , wild fires , tornadoes , but nothing was like the wind and water I seen then.

The good thing is that Irma is still too far away to predict what it will do. It still has time to wear out and fall apart, or it could turn away from the US and never make land. Either of those scenarios would be good for our East Coast.

At this point, it looks like it will pass almost directly over Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and possibly Cuba. After that, it might continue to the US mainland.
Keep hoping it falls apart before it gets near Florida, and if it doesn't, it is time to rethink the wisdom or lack of wisdom of living near water.

Problem is wisdom is not required or expected these days. If you live never the coast you just buy insurance and federally.funded flood insurance. And let everyone one else that had the wisdom not to build on the water pay for anything that happens.
In Florida our insurance bill is about twice what it is in central Georgia. Why because we are forced to pay for the people that without wisdom and never think about hurricanes until they are hit by one.

Ed, is there a reason that you don't live in Montana, No. Dakota or Minnesota. Hurricanes and floods would much less of a nuisance there. Or you could come to AZ and find yourself a mountain villa. However, we do occasionally have stormy weather and some flooding to say nothing about range fires.

What might be wisdom to some is stupidity to others. I am not about to go to Montana where my brother now resides and he came here once and very quickly declared "never again".

Dust let me answer you as two questions . First Hurricanes are a pain but if you live far enough inland that storm surge is not a problem then with reasonable care you can get through quite easily. I have been through about 10 hurricanes but at about 21-25 miles inland big whoopie!

Second question why I live here. Like your brother I visited Florida once and said never again. Then my company made me an offer to go to Florida for two years and you can name your location and your job. Too good to pass up. Long story short daughter by then entered high school so we could not move then. Then they went to local colleges and we could not move then. Then they got married to local guys with local jobs so we could not move then. Then grandkids, then great grand kids and I am still here. My blood is so thin now I would probably freeze in Maine.

But my complaint is not about Florida, not about hurricanes, but about people that build in swamps get flooded and demand the government pay for their lost. Or people that build on the beach, raise holly heck if anyone walks on "their beach" but when a storm wipes out their place they demand the government rebuild to their specifications. I really hate paying to rebuild the same house each time a storm carries it out to sea.

Ed I'm with you. Where I live I am 65 miles from either coast. The storms usually get knocked down over that distance. But my wife and I did prepare by getting in a supply of drinking water. If that runs out I have a couple of cases of really good wine. That sounds like more fun anyhow. About people that keep building in flood prone areas; If you and I keep paying for it what's to stop them? The insurance companies keep re-building neighborhoods that are behind dikes and below lake levels as in New Orleans then you and I and the rest of us will keep on paying. A friend of mine had an accident and the other driver had no insurance so my friend had resort to his Uninsured driver insurance to pay most of his damages. Another bill we have to pay to cover the incompetent people in our midst.
