Breya-

I have a couple of silver maple logs that I am getting split just for using in bowl turning from a tree that blew down a few weeks back. By the way, which part of Indiana are you located?

Post by B-RAD »

Since Rick has mentioned Shopsmith bowl blanks, has anyone purchased them?

Brad

I purchased a box of bowl blanks from a TA about 4 years ago. I can't remember what the price was, but it was discounted if purchased during the academy. It was a good deal at the time. As for the sizes, they are all on the small size, ranging from about 4 1/2 X 4 1/2 and about 1 3/4 thick to some bigger ones around 7 x 7 and 2 1/2 inch thick. They are all sealed and there were around 14 blanks total in the box. Most were not identified so its guess work on what species of wood they are other than they all are definitely a hard wood variety. They also were well dried as there is a huge difference turning them versus green wood. Hope this helps you.

A great source of free wood can be the tree trimming crews. It's really easy to get two or more bowl blanks and only takes quick second to cut a round or two. Turn the wood ASAP into oversized blanks and when they dry re-shape them. Try to dry them slowly to keep them from checking. :D
