I noticed that too. But what I don’t know is if the headstock pulley can be reversed, instead of the motor pulley. It might interfere with the pulley guard.jsburger wrote: If the diagrams (not picture) in the Magna jointer head rest manual are correct as to the pulley spacing your pulley should work without the speed changer. Just food for thought.bandmn wrote:if i go with the whole jointer unit maybe id be best off going with the mkc tools kit
If you go with the 10ER you found you get a complete machine with the rare 4E jointer and head rest. All you need is the jointer motor pulley kit from Skip for $95.
If you go for a MK V jointer you need the jointer ($200 +-), Skip's SPT adapter ($95) and Skip's head stock pulley ($95).
To me this is a no brainer. Go with the 10ER and jointer. Now you have a second 10ER to set up as a dedicated drill press. I don't think you will be disappointed. The current MK V jointer and the Magna 4E jointer are almost identical. There is no difference in the performance of the two.
One other thing. Look at the picture of Skip's 4E jointer pulley. The 5" pulley is spaced at least an inch away from the 3 step pulley. I don't know if it has to be that way but if it does then a 4 step pulley will not work.

I am pretty sure it will. Also see Skip's picture on MKCTools.com of his jointer motor pulley. It is at least an inch away from the 3 step.BuckeyeDennis wrote:I noticed that too. Have you checked with the seller to see if the pulleys (upper and lower) are there and just not shown in the Craigslist photo. This setup would have had the original Magna jointer pulley and upper pulley to be usable.

Good point. However the motor pulley is the only one almost impossible to fine. The head stock pulley is the standard one. The lister does say no motor so... It is still a question that should be asked. I don't need another one, I have 5, but I would snap that one up in a minute.rpd wrote:Have you checked with the seller to see if the pulleys (upper and lower) are there and just not shown in the Craigslist photo. Re: 10er jointer head
I have contacted the seller and hes not available till sunday to discuss the sale of it so i have not been able to see if the pulleys are there but im guessing with the motor missing the pulleys are missing as well. And yes i am thinking about just buying the kit from mkc. The only thing left open at this point is if the pulley on the jointer unit is there, the pics dont show that angle but ill know sunday.

The pulley on the jointer should not be a show stopper. It is not 'unique'.

Re: 10er jointer head
Based on the 5" pulley spacing options, and especially given that I have a speed changer, I'd buy the 10ER motor drive adapter from Skip too. I didn't even know that he sold that adapter setup. But for the record, here's what I found when I compared the Congress Drives pulley to my original 10ER pulleys.jsburger wrote:I am pretty sure it will. First, here are the original pulleys, mounted as I received them -- I checked the original Craigslist photos to be sure. I can't say for certain that they're mounted correctly, as my machine is still dismantled and awaiting restoration. But without a speed changer, it does match the illustration in the 4E jointer mounting instructions.
Next, here's the new Congress Drives pulley, mounted directly on the 5/8" motor shaft. The geometry is identical, and the pulley runs perfectly true. Grainger sells the exact same pulley for $70.
And finally, here are the original pulleys again, but with the 5" pulley reversed and mounted outboard. They look a lot like Skip's setup that way, and would indeed give you some flexibility in headstock positioning when using the jointer.
