You guys are making shop time sound like going to work every day. I go there to forget inventory programs.

NO WAY will the shop ever again sound like work. I retired and "That's the way it is". There is no longer a pressure to perform and no deadlines to meet and no financial targets to beat, and no customer to bow down to and no engineering managers to cover for. NO, I am retired and loving it. Shop will never be like work.

No I did not forget. In comparison to what I dealt with at work she is an absolute sweetheart. I'd marry her all over again even after 52 years or maybe it is 53.

If you can't see file extensions when you look at them in My Computer or Windows Explorer, do this:

Open My Computer (or windows explorer)
Tools pulldown menu
View tab
In the advanced setting area, UNCHECK the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types",

This allows you to see the file name and extension when you see the file.

To rename the file, right click on it and select 'Rename'. When you do this, you can change change the file extension.

This will forever and a day allow you to see file extensions until you change it, if you decide to. My computers are all set up so that I always see file extensions. Personal preference. The risk is if you change the extension OR delete the extension, the original program used to open it won't be able to unless you change it back.

Badda bing, badda bang......you can now change extenstions in a REAL environment.......Windows. (easy on me you anti-Windows guys:D )

I use a program called "Everything I Own". It has provisions for any info you need for anything you own as well as the ability to attach a picture of the item. It is ideal for insurance purposes and for keeping track of where they are stored or for just keeping tabs on how much you have spent on tools, etc. I downloaded it from:

It costs $19.95 to download or $24.95 for a CD. They also have a free trial version you can download.

George, Thanks for the tip about the Every Thing I own program. I downloaded the trial version yesterday and really like it so I will buy it today. Thanks again I have been wanting to do this for years.

That kind of organization sounds good, but it is too late for me. My tools were purchased over the last 50 years and while I know what tools I have in the garage, I have no idea when they were purchased or what they cost me. As long as my old brain keeps working I know what is there and what drawer it sits in. When I can't find the tools anymore, I'm too old to use them too, so not finding them would be a benefit.

I use but have not completed an m for loo or theftExcel Workshop Inventory Spreadsheet. I think I found this in a Woodnet.net post a couple of years ago.

It has columns for NAME OF TOOL, MAKE, MODEL, SERIAL NUMBER, PURCHASE DATE, WHERE PURCHASED, PURCHASE PRICE, ESTIMATED CURRENT VALUE and a PHOTO column. At the top of the spreadsheet are lines for name, address, etc. and it keeps a running value total on the inventory listed.

Is there a way for me to add this spreadsheet as an attachment. When I looked at the Manage Attachments, I do not see Excel files listed.

Would this would be nice if you have an insurance claim due to loss or theft?

Chris. I wouldn't expect a reply from S Brian, his profile shows he was last active here in Feb, 2016.

You have to watch the Date Posted, this is an old thread from 2010 that was resurrected by "bredd", with his first and so far only post, presumably to promote "LongPathTool Software", which one might guess he has an interest in. No link in his post, so I guess not technically spam.

An interesting topic though and certainly worth a new look.
