Slight quill deflection

Hi, I've got an '83 MkV 510, and recently I've noticed that when I'm in drill press mode, the quill (and bit) deflect slightly away from the way tubes. Anyone experienced this?

I'm getting ready to do a deep clean & maintenance on this machine, as it is new to me, and I'm wondering if I should teardown the quill at the same time.

I would have to know whether it is the quill body, the quill shaft, the chuck, or the bit that deflects or what combination.

You stated bit and quill. Not sure if you meant the quill body.

You did not quantify(put a dimension on) 'slightly'.

It is hard if not impossible to diagnose your problem with the information provided. You state that the problem was noted in the drill press mode. All of the same parts that could be the cause are also in play in every other operating mode.

I would hesitate to saw that you need to "tear down" in order to identify and or fix this problem. You do need to do a thorough inspection especially of the quill and the chuck. Remove the chuck from the discussion. If you have a serious issue it will be noticeable without the chuck.

The main drive shaft might move in and out very slightly (not an issue) but it should not be laterally moveable enough to notice without instrumentation. If you can grab the end of the drive shaft with your fingers and feel lateral movement you most likely have quill bearing problems.

That is what I would first suspicion (quill bearings or quill housing).

If the issue is truly ONLY in the drill press mode I would turn my attention to the chuck.

In the drill press mode, mount a sanding disk on the top side of the headstock. Mount a drill bit in the chuck. Adjust so that the drill bit just barely touches the table top. While slowly turning the sanding disk watch the tip of the drill bit. Is it moving in small circles or is it remaining in one spot. Obviously, it should not move in circles (bent or mounted wrong). Apply slight sidewise pressure to the chuck (drill bit). Does the tip of the bit move laterally. It should not. Again, quill bearings or quill housing.
