Mark V headstock lock

My old Mark V headstock lock is malfunctioning. I can't lock it up tight anymore, and the handle is real hard to turn in either direction to try to lock it up or unlock it. I had it set up as a drill press, locking it pretty tight as it worked ok, then I layed it down to hook up the belt sander and I couldn't get it locked tight again after unlocking it. How do I remove the headstock lock parts to see what is wrong with them? Or how to I test it to see whats wrong?

Thank you very much Mike907. I got the headstock lock loose enough to get the headstock off of the support rails, and took the belt cover and motor off. Then I had easy access to the headstock lock. Easing the screw back and forth I cleaned off all of the debris and soaked some thread cleaner/lubricant into the aluminum clamping wedges and screwed them into the center. Right away I could see that there was a small piece of aluminum that had sheared off one of the threads in the wedge block stuck in the threads of the steel screw rod. I measured the threads and counted 16 threads per inch and ran out to the shop and got a screw file for 16 threads per inch and filed the threads out clean. Then cleaned off all of the liquid lubricant I had used to get it apart and applied the normal graphite dry lubricant to the threads and put it back together. And now it works like a champ. Of course while I was in there I cleaned the headstock all out and lubricated the drive sheaves and checked the belt tensions.

I have a set of two of them that I got out of my father's tool box when he died several years ago. He had showed me how to use them when I was a kid, and I always remember they were real useful around the farm to restore old, rusty bolts. Each one is about a 1/2" square, maybe 10" long, with screw restoring file teeth on each side, a 2" blank space in the middle, and another set of them on the other end. So each one of these has files for 8 different thread spacings. And I have two different ones so I can "fix" threads on 16 different thread types. The more elderly I get, and the older my farm machinery gets, these two files are the most valuable tools in my toolbox. Everyone that works on old machinery needs a set of them.
