Dust Chute for Disc Sander

Post by piccut »

I purchased my Mark V back in 1983 (actually, it was a present from my wife when I turned 40) but didn't get the quality time to really use it. Now that I'm retired, I built a 12'X18' detached woodshop....it's all mine. No sharing of space this time. It didn't take me long (i.e. 1st project) to figure out that using my Mark V disc sander in my new shop without any dust collection system created a real dust problem. Not only breathing, but I had dust all over. Now I'm looking into a dust collection system. While doing so, I noticed in my Mark V Owner's Manual, that there were plans for a dust chute for the disc sander. The manual references the "Shopsmith Sawdust Collection System" woodworking plan FA-1867. Does anyone know if these plans are available online (if so, I haven't found them) or still available from Shopsmith? Looking forward to any help out there. Thanks.......Paul

You can buy a dist collector for the disk sander from SS to connect to your shop vac. It works really well. Cost about $40.

I ended up buying the 555167 disc sander dust Chute. They still sell that for $47.09 now on sale for $42.38. Or do the upgrade to the 520 system where the dust chute is standard.... that is what I wish I had done much sooner and save myself money in the long run.

The older "power tool woodworking for everyone" book had a simple plan for a homemade dust chute. I made it 20 years ago and it still works like a champ. You can also find older lower saw guards on Ebay for under $18 that will go a long way towards eliminating the dust problem.

One other option is to pick up a used lower saw guard from a 505/510/520. They show up all the time and can be had for less than the dust chute.
