Shopsmith 10e opinions

Good morning,

First post but hoping I could get your opinion on this 10e. Seems to be in great shape but wondering about the price; has the speed changer which I know is harder to come by. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It looks in good condition, and the speed changer is a definite plus. There is something odd on the motor, it looks like the capacitor is hanging on the front side of the motor and missing it's cover. It looks like it was being used as a dedicated lathe, and I think it has an extension of the way tubes for turning longer pieces (the black sleeves and way tubes to the right of the pivot base). Some parts like the tables, drill chuck, saw arbor, disc sander, etc are not shown in the picture but are likely off screen. It would seem to also come with a separate drill press.

The asking price seems too high to me.

When you are searching on Craigslist, search under Shopsmith and also Shop Smith, you will pick up more listings that way.

Also look in the surrounding areas as well. I see more SS's listed for sale during the summer than the winter as well.

Here is a listing East of you for a 10ER that needs work but has a speed changer, mortising attachment, face plates, shaper fence and jig saw. While the listed price is ridiculous, the ad states to make an offer so you could get a really good deal just by expanding your search area.

The one in Brenda's post is a 10ER and looks like a good deal.

I believe the price shown ($12345) is just a place holder not an actual price. Looks like they just want it gone, $150 is likely a fair price. (I paid $25, $75 and $75 for my 10ER's, only one came with the speed changer.)

I agree with both Ron and Brenda. $500 is high even with a speed changer in my opinion. A little patience and as Brenda said expand your search a little further out and you will eventually find one for a good price. I have 5 10ER's here and 4 came with speed changers. They were all bought locally within 40 miles of my house. The most expensive one was $125 with a speed changer. I also got 2 from the same person, both with speed changers and one had an A.O. Smith 3/4HP motor for $175 for both.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it. I am going to wait or possibly go look at the one in Janesville. I did speak with the gentleman on the phone regarding the one near me but he is unlikely to drop the price to where I think it would be valued; although I do think it’s in great shape and has been in the family since new.

Yes that price is way too high - I have paid $50 each for two 10E's and been given three more for free. The speed changer adds about $75-$100 to the value if it's in good condition but I wouldn't consider paying more than $150-$200 tops for it depending on condition, quality of bench, completeness of accessories (drill chuck, lathe parts and tools, sanding discs, saw table, fence and miter gauge etc).

The 12345 listed as price is only a filler since the form requires a price the listers sometimes just fill it like that when they just want fair offers.

I restore Shopsmiths as a hobby so when I look at one I consider the price vs. what is included. This is where you need to do a little homework. Study the manuals to familiarize yourself as to what comes with a complete Shopsmith. If it is missing parts you will find yourself on ebay or the like shopping for those missing pieces. This can add up fast when trying to get your new prize complete. Second look at the optional accessories it has like the speed changer. As for what the others have said about price, I agree. But even free is not always a good price. I recently restored a Mark 5 Greenie I was given and put over $500 into it to restore it and have it complete as if it were new which I sold for $500.
